Small Works Estimator
We're looking for a Small Works Estimator to join our Commercial Team, providing the estimating function for bespoke small works associated with HMS' core business activities. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced estimating professional to play a key role in supporting the commercial success of our construction, maintenance and planned works programmes.
Working closely with the Commercial Team, Contracts Managers and key stakeholders, you'll be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for projects that fall outside the National Schedule of Rates. You'll manage the estimating process from tender enquiry through to submission, helping to secure profitable work, manage commercial risk and support the delivery of business growth objectives.
What you'll be doing:
- Managing the estimating process for bespoke small works, maintenance and planned works projects from initial enquiry through to tender submission and handover.
- Reviewing tender opportunities, assessing scope, specifications, timescales and contractual requirements to produce accurate and competitive estimates.
- Collaborating with Commercial Teams, Contracts Managers and budget holders to develop bids, identify resources and evaluate commercial risks and opportunities.
- Preparing tender documentation, including preliminaries assessments, prime cost estimates, bid summaries and contract handover information.
- Coordinating and evaluating subcontractor and supplier quotations to ensure accurate pricing and best value.
- Supporting tender adjudication processes and presenting bids for review and approval prior to submission.
- Negotiating with contractors, suppliers and subcontractors to achieve the best outcomes in relation to quality, cost, compliance and customer requirements.
- Monitoring and reporting on tender performance, including success rates and profitability.
- Building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, suppliers and other stakeholders to support effective collaboration and contract delivery.
- Supporting continuous improvement, supply chain development and business growth initiatives across the organisation.
- Managing multiple estimates simultaneously while ensuring compliance with company policies, procedures and relevant legislation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
