What’s the opportunity? (Role)
We are seeking a Smart Building Engineer to join our team.
Working closely with the Lead Smart Building Engineer, Principal Data Building Engineer, and the wider Smart Building team, the role will support the design, delivery, commissioning and ongoing improvement of smart building data and integration systems across Hereworks projects.
The role combines BMS, IoT, data integration, commissioning and troubleshooting, with responsibility for ensuring building data is reliable, structured and usable from field systems through edge infrastructure to smart building and cloud platforms.
This is a technical role suited to someone who enjoys understanding how systems work end-to-end and solving problems across devices, data, networks and software.

What will you be doing? (Responsibilities)
Smart Building Data & Integration
- Design, configure and maintain data flows across BMS, IoT devices, edge gateways, MQTT brokers, smart building platforms and cloud systems
- Configure and support integrations between building systems, edge infrastructure and cloud platforms
- Develop and maintain scripts, tools and automation for data ingestion, transformation, mapping, validation and monitoring
- Support integration technologies and protocols including MQTT, BACnet, APIs and other relevant interfaces
- Maintain a clear understanding of system architectures and data flows across assigned projects
Data Standards & Quality
- Structure and maintain building data including asset registers, point lists, device metadata, data mappings and interoperability records
- Define and apply consistent asset naming, point naming, metadata and data-model standards
- Map raw building-system data into standardised telemetry structures
- Support the implementation of standards and ontologies such as BDNS, Digital Building Ontology (DBO), Brick, Haystack and project-specific models
- Ensure project data is accurate, consistent and aligned with Hereworks standards

Commissioning & Troubleshooting
- Commission and validate smart building integrations from field systems through to edge and cloud platforms
- Confirm devices are connected, data values and units are correct, naming and metadata are compliant, and data is mapped to the correct assets and spaces
- Validate that telemetry reaches the required platforms reliably and that dashboards, analytics, alarms and FDD outputs operate as intended
- Investigate and resolve issues across field devices, BMS platforms, networks, edge gateways, MQTT brokers, data mappings and cloud integrations
- Work with BMS contractors, network teams, vendors and software providers to identify and resolve root causes
Project & Team Delivery
- Work under and alongside the Lead Smart Building Engineer and Principal Smart Building Engineer in the technical delivery of smart building projects
- Collaborate with the wider Smart Building team, project teams, subcontractors, consultants, vendors and clients
- Support the development of smart building use cases and translate requirements into data and integration requirements
- Review technical information from contractors and vendors to ensure systems can be integrated successfully
- Produce and maintain clear technical, commissioning and validation documentation
- Contribute to the continued development of Hereworks tools, standards, automation and smart building delivery processes
What do you need? (Requirements)
- Experience with BMS, building controls, IoT or smart building systems
- Experience integrating technical systems or working with building/IoT data
- Good understanding of BMS points, devices, values, units and metadata
- Understanding of data flows between field systems, edge systems and cloud platforms
- Experience with MQTT, APIs or other system integration technologies
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across both systems and data
- Experience using scripting, programming or data-processing tools to support or automate technical work
- Ability to understand technical architectures, network diagrams and system documentation
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with engineers, contractors, vendors and project stakeholders
- A degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Building Services or a related discipline is beneficial, although equivalent relevant industry experience will also be considered.
Desired but not Essential
- Experience with some of the following would be beneficial:
- Tridium Niagara, Trend or similar BMS platforms
- BACnet
- Python, JavaScript or SQL
- MQTT brokers and edge gateways
- AWS, Azure or GCP
- Docker or containerised applications
- Smart building platforms such as KODE, TwinView or similar
- BDNS, DBO, Brick, Haystack or other building data models
- FDD, energy analytics or building-performance analytics
- Basic networking including IP addressing, VLANs, routing and firewalls
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles relevant to connected building systems, including secure remote access, network segmentation and credential management.
