Role Description

The SMT/AOI Inspector is a full-time, on-site role based in Letchworth, responsible for ensuring the quality and accuracy of surface-mount technology (SMT) assemblies through manual and automated optical inspection (AOI). Day-to-day tasks include inspecting PCB assemblies against drawings and specifications, verifying solder joints and component placement, and identifying defects or non-conformances. The role involves operating AOI equipment, reviewing inspection results, and recording findings in quality systems, as well as working with production and engineering teams to resolve issues and support root-cause analysis. The inspector will follow established work instructions, adhere to health and safety and ESD controls, and contribute to maintaining high manufacturing standards and on-time delivery.

  • Experience with SMT inspection, AOI equipment operation, and PCB assembly quality checks.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, circuit board layouts, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, visual acuity for fine work, and accurate defect identification and recording.
  • Familiarity with electronic components, soldering quality standards (e.g., IPC criteria), and rework processes is beneficial.
  • Basic computer skills for using AOI software, production tracking systems, and quality reporting tools.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Previous experience in electronics manufacturing or a similar quality-focused role is preferred.
  • Relevant vocational training or qualification in electronics, manufacturing, or a related technical field is advantageous.
