Social & Digital Communities Specialist
Build and manage Mayhew’s social and digital communities, turning online reach and engagement into meaningful supporter action. Be present at the heart of Mayhew’s day-to-day work, proactively capturing authentic stories and content from frontline teams, animals, volunteers and communities.
Bring specialist, up-to-date social media knowledge and a strong instinct for formats, trends and online behaviour, helping Mayhew grow engaged audiences and move people towards donating, volunteering, adopting, fundraising and other forms of support.
Main Areas of Responsibility
Social Media and Digital Communities’ Delivery
- Manage Mayhew’s day-to-day social channels, content calendar, scheduling, publishing, moderation and community responses.
- Build an active, warm and responsive online community through active two-way engagement, responding to and interacting with supporters rather than simply publishing content.
- Respond to comments and messages in line with Mayhew’s tone, guidance and escalation routes, ensuring supporters receive timely and helpful responses.
- Keep Mayhew’s social presence current and platform-appropriate, proactively identifying opportunities to increase relevance, reach and action.
- Exercise day-to-day editorial judgement within agreed brand, safeguarding and reputational parameters, escalating sensitive or higher-risk issues appropriately.
Frontline Presence and Content Capture
- Spend regular time on site and with clinic, community, rescue, rehoming, TheraPaws, volunteering and other delivery teams.
- Be present at the heart of Mayhew’s daily activity, identifying stories and content opportunities that would not be visible through predominantly remote work.
- Capture planned and real-time photos, short-form video, reels, stories, quotes, updates and behind-the-scenes content.
- Build trusted relationships with delivery teams while ensuring content gathering is safe, respectful, consented and does not disrupt services or animal welfare.
Content Creation and Storytelling
- Create engaging, platform-specific posts, reels, short videos, graphics, captions, stories and community updates.
- Translate everyday Mayhew activity into warm, accurate, ethical and action-focused storytelling that makes the charity’s work visible and relatable.
- Use Mayhew’s brand voice consistently while adapting tone, pace and format to different platforms and audiences.
- Repurpose strong content across channels and campaigns, working with Brand, Audiences & Communications, PR and fundraising colleagues.
- Flag website content issues or opportunities to the relevant colleague and provide content or information needed to resolve them.
Audience Growth, Activation and Conversion
- Grow digital audiences with particular focus on people likely to contribute money, time or voice.
- Create content that encourages people to donate, volunteer, fundraise, adopt, refer, advocate, share, attend or partner with Mayhew.
- Work within Mayhew’s wider audience activation framework, helping people move from awareness and engagement towards appropriate supporter actions.
- Identify signals of interest and ensure relevant audiences or leads are connected to the appropriate next step, journey or team.
- Work with Digital Fundraising & Journeys to connect engaged audiences to fundraising landing pages, sign-up routes, donation journeys and follow-up.
- Work with Partnerships & Volunteer Activation, Public Fundraising, High Value and other colleagues where the appropriate next action is volunteering, fundraising, partnership or another form of engagement. Proactively test trends, formats, hooks, calls to action and community-building approaches in a relevant and values-led way.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
