Job Description: Social Media Lead
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Social Media Lead based in the United Kingdom.
This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced social media professional to shape the strategy and execution of news and current affairs content across major digital platforms. You will lead day-to-day social coverage while driving audience growth, engagement, and platform-specific storytelling. The role combines editorial judgment with data-driven optimization, requiring a strong understanding of breaking news and evolving social trends. You will mentor social producers and editors while collaborating closely with editorial, video, design, and audience teams. From major political events to fast-moving news cycles, you will help determine how stories are packaged and delivered to audiences. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of social performance within a dynamic, high-impact digital media environment.
Accountabilities
- Lead the social media strategy and daily execution for US politics, national and global news, elections, and major current affairs.
- Develop short- and long-term social coverage plans around breaking news, political developments, and significant news cycles.
- Monitor breaking stories and ensure timely, accurate, engaging, and platform-appropriate publishing across social channels.
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop social media producers and editors while maintaining high standards of performance and quality.
- Develop platform-specific strategies and content approaches for Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and emerging platforms.
- Identify compelling story angles, hooks, headlines, captions, thumbnails, and visual treatments designed to maximize audience engagement while protecting editorial integrity.
- Partner with editorial, video, design, and audience development teams to create and distribute high-performing content.
- Monitor platform trends, algorithm changes, audience behavior, and emerging formats to continuously refine social strategies.
- Analyze performance data to identify opportunities and optimize content, engagement, and audience growth.
- Support recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and development of social media talent.
- Ensure consistency in brand voice, publishing standards, editorial quality, and social media best practices.
- Maintain effective communication across teams and ensure social activity supports broader editorial priorities.
- Take ownership of social audience growth, engagement, and overall channel performance.
- Remain adaptable and responsive during breaking news, elections, major political events, and other high-impact situations.

Requirements
- Significant professional experience leading social media within a news, politics, digital media, or similar editorial organization.
- Previous experience managing, mentoring, or leading social media teams.
- Strong understanding of the US political landscape, national and global current affairs, and major news cycles.
- Deep knowledge of major social platforms, including their audiences, content formats, publishing practices, and best-performing approaches.
- Demonstrated success growing social audiences and improving engagement through platform-specific strategies.
- Strong editorial judgment and the ability to identify stories, angles, and formats likely to resonate with social audiences.
- Experience covering breaking news in a fast-paced newsroom or digital media environment.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to use audience and platform data to inform content and growth strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to editorial accuracy, consistency, and brand quality.
- High ownership and accountability, with the ability to take responsibility for team performance and social outcomes.
- Ability to work effectively across editorial, creative, video, design, and audience development functions.
- Ability to provide examples of managed social accounts, campaigns, or content, ideally supported by audience growth, engagement, or performance metrics.
