About the job

HMICFRS independently assesses the effectiveness and efficiency of police forces and fire and rescue services – in the public interest. We promote improvements in policing and fire and rescue services to make everyone safer.

We are independent of the Government, police and fire and rescue services. We ask the questions that we believe the public wish to have answered and produce major reports that shine a light on issues at the very heart of policing and fire and rescue services.

Our reports are widely covered by the media and help inform the public of the performance of their local police forces and fire and rescue services. You can find out more about HMICFRS on our website and see some of our recent reports.

Working at HMICFRS gives you an opportunity to make a real difference to the quality of local police and fire and rescue services and the lives of the public. HMICFRS is a unique organisation with staff seconded or loaned from across the Civil Service, police forces and fire and rescue services. We set ourselves high standards, taking great pride in the quality of work we achieve and the opportunities we create for our staff.

Job description

The Social Media Manager is responsible for delivering social media campaigns, managing all HMICFRS social media channels and working with senior policing and fire leaders on topics that directly impact everyone and are often on the front pages or leading news bulletins.

We are looking for a creative, proactive and experienced communications professional to join our team. You will be a team player who is passionate about using communications to drive measurable change. We can offer you an exciting challenge in a friendly and ambitious team.

We are also a rewarding place to work, taking development seriously and ensuring everyone has a chance to thrive.

The role of the Social Media Manager (HEO) is to manage HMICFRS’s social media channels and support the delivery of HMICFRS’s press office, working with the Media Manager (SEO) and Head of Media (G7). You’ll be devising creative social media strategies to target our audiences, creating social media graphics, filming senior spokespeople and evaluating your work thoroughly, as well as supporting the team with drafting press releases, media Q&As and other media materials.

Our work is widely covered by the media and our social media presence continues to grow. Recent high-profile reports include the annual state of policing report and national reports on events policing and firearms licensing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
