Social Media Officer (temp) - Rochford District Council

Temporary (3 months), Full Time
£16.66 to £19.90 per hour PAYE
Location: Rochford
Closing Date: 14th October 2026
The Role
We are looking for a creative and proactive Social Media Officer to join our team and deliver the Council's priorities. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated with a flair for creativity and a passion for digital communications and storytelling.
This is a temporary 3-month position, working across Brentwood and Rochford on a hybrid basis.
Key Accountabilities
- Create lively, engaging content across our social platforms including:
- High quality written content both short and long form
- Graphic content and imagery for social media, newsletters, and Intranet
- Smartphone video and photography (recording and editing).
- Schedule, publish, and monitor social media content, responding to our audiences in a timely, friendly, and human tone
- Monitor media and social media coverage and report back as necessary
- Ensure the effective use and management of the Council's social media channels
- Identify developments in social media and emerging new platforms, and suggest new approaches
- Collect, analyze, and report on customer insight data for both organic and paid campaigns
- Support other members of the Communications Team to translate their campaigns into engaging social media content
- Design multimedia assets for use on social media
- Deputise for other communications roles within the team as required
- To undertake any other duties which may reasonably be within the competence of the post holder

The Experience You Will Bring
- Experience of social media video, image, and content production, to deliver engaging digital content
- Creative management skills to take an idea from concept through to delivery with camera, lighting, sound recording, and editing experience
- Strong experience in image and video editing
- Experience reporting on social media and digital activity, identifying any trends
- Understanding of communications in a political local government/public services environment
- Ability to work flexibly to meet competing demands to tight deadlines, with exceptional problem-solving skills
- Understanding of managing social media content and scheduling software in a business situation
- Able to translate complex messages into simple, engaging content using a combination of words and pictures
- Ability to create multimedia assets, e.g., graphics using Canva
- Able to accurately proofread copy and pick up on errors
- Good level of general education
- Background in communications, journalism, digital media, or relevant experience
- Current valid Full Driving License
- A flexible working approach to attend both organisations in person, as and when required
- Able to work outside normal office hours if required to attend meetings and events
- Adhere to the Council’s values and behaviours
- Commitment to maximising potential and continuous improvement of self and of service
