Use your social media skills to make a real difference. Join CMV Action as a Social Media Volunteer - help raise awareness of congenital CMV, support affected families and grow our online community by creating engaging content across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn & other platforms.

What difference will you make?

Every post we share helps more people learn about congenital CMV (cCMV) – the most common congenital infection in the UK and a leading cause of childhood disability that remains largely unknown.

As a small charity with limited resources, volunteers are essential to helping us reach more families, healthcare professionals and supporters than we could alone. By supporting our social media activity, you'll help us increase awareness of cCMV, promote simple prevention messages, and ensure that families know where to turn for trusted information and support. We also don't have a huge team, so bringing your experience and specialism will really help strengthen and grow our small charity.

Your work will help us

  • Reach new audiences and grow our online community.
  • Increase engagement with our awareness campaigns and fundraising activities.
  • Share the experiences of families affected by cCMV, helping others feel less isolated.
  • Promote our support services, including CMV Connect, so more families can access the help they need.
  • Raise the profile of CMV Action, helping us attract more supporters, volunteers and donors.

The content you create and share could help a pregnant woman learn how to reduce her risk of CMV, connect a newly diagnosed family with support, or inspire someone to fundraise or volunteer for the charity.

By giving your time and skills, you'll be making a genuine difference to a small charity working to improve the lives of families affected by congenital CMV while helping us work towards a future where every family has access to the information and support they need.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a volunteer who is enthusiastic about social media and genuinely cares about helping our families, educating others and sharing our work.

Where you have volunteered or worked in this area before, you will be able to bring specialist skills and experience to help strengthen and grow our small charity.

Important qualities we're looking for

Empathy & Sensitivity

You'll be engaging with content about cCMV, disability and family experiences, sometimes including difficult or emotional stories from families as well as professionals working with cCMV. We need someone who can communicate with warmth and care, as well as professionalism and who understands the importance of representing families' experiences respectfully and accurately.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Confidence writing for social media / Copywriting

You'll need to volunteer alongside our freelance communications officer to ensure there is a consistent tone across all platforms. The ability to turn information into engaging, accessible content for the different platform audiences is important. You can use your previous writing experience to support this.

Reliability and communication. It's a home-based role but being able to keep in regular contact with the Freelance Communications Officer will be key. Alongside delivering what you've agreed to do and communicating as early as possible if availability changes.

Graphic Design & illustration

We need your help to create and design posts for social media platforms, newsletter and website articles. Your experience of Canva, Adobe or other programmes that can bring our work to life will be hugely helpful.

Experience

We don't mind where your experience comes from, as long as you can use your skills, understanding and experience to help grow and strengthen our social media support. You will need to have had at least 3 years experience and be able to evidence how you can apply your experience with us.

Also valuable and we would love help with - but not essential

  • Experience using scheduling tools
  • Basic graphic design skills, particularly using Canva or other programmes if you have access to them already.
  • An understanding of social media analytics and what drives engagement. You could help us grow this area.
  • Awareness of safeguarding good practice when discussing content online
  • Any lived experience or personal connection to CMV, disability, or family health charities (not required, but often brings valuable insight and authenticity)

We're a small, friendly organisation, so we particularly value volunteers who are comfortable working independently, bring their own ideas, and are happy to ask questions when they need support. You'll be volunteering closely with our Freelance Communications Officer rather than a large in-house team, so a collaborative, proactive approach matters most to us. Your experience will help guide us with our social media support.

Above all, we're looking for someone who believes in what we do and wants to help more families, healthcare professionals and supporters learn about cCMV. You'll want to do your role well and know that it matters to those you are helping.

Remote

What will you be doing?

As a Social Media Volunteer, you'll play an important role in helping CMV Action raise awareness of congenital CMV (cCMV), support families, and encourage more people to engage with our work.

Working alongside our Freelance Communications Officer, you'll help to share inspiring stories, promote campaigns and events, celebrate fundraising achievements, and increase awareness of a virus that affects around 1 in 200 babies born in the UK.

Depending on your interests and level of experience, you could get involved in

  • Writing engaging posts for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other social media platforms.
  • Scheduling content
  • Creating simple graphics or sourcing suitable images (if you have design/Canva skills).
  • Monitoring comments, messages and notifications, responding where appropriate or flagging anything that needs attention.
  • Helping to grow our online community by increasing engagement and reach.
  • Supporting awareness campaigns, fundraising events and key dates throughout the year.
  • Share ideas for new content and helping us identify social media trends and opportunities.

This is a flexible, home-based role, and we'll work with you to agree a regular volunteering pattern that fits around your availability. Whether you can give a couple of hours a week or more, your contribution will help us reach more families, healthcare professionals and supporters.

CMV Action is a small charity with a big impact. As part of our friendly team of Freelancers and Volunteers, you'll have the opportunity to contribute ideas, develop your skills and see the difference your work makes in helping families affected by congenital CMV feel informed, supported and connected.

We would particularly value someone who has at least 3 years experience from working or volunteering in environments using your skills with social media, copywriting, campaigns, journalism or any other area that would benefit our small charity where we don't have specialists, and can learn from you and what you bring.
