At BAM, we are currently recruiting for a Social Sustainability Manager to support projects across the Southeast of England. In this role, you will lead and deliver social sustainability initiatives that create positive outcomes across social mobility, employment, education, skills development, community investment, volunteering, and social inclusion.
Working closely with internal teams, clients, and local communities, you will be responsible for planning, promoting, delivering, monitoring, and reporting on BAM’s social sustainability activities. You will play a key role in ensuring social value commitments are achieved, stakeholder relationships are strengthened, and meaningful, lasting benefits are delivered to the communities in which we work.
Your team
- The role offers a blend of office, home, and project site working, with hybrid and flexible working arrangements actively supported.
- Travel will be required as part of the role, with the frequency and expectations discussed in more detail during the interview process.

Social Sustainability Knowledge
- Act as a subject matter expert in social sustainability and social value, promoting best practice and industry-leading approaches.
- Apply and communicate social value measurement frameworks and methodologies.
- Stay informed of emerging legislation, policy, research, and industry trends.
- Identify opportunities to maximise social impact while managing associated risks.
Strategy & Planning
- Lead the development and delivery of social sustainability strategies, plans, and targets aligned with client requirements and National TOMs.
- Deliver initiatives across employment, skills, education, volunteering, community investment, and social inclusion.
- Build strong relationships across BAM and external stakeholders to support strategic objectives.
- Support regional and business-wide strategies, working groups, events, and communications activities.

Compliance & Assurance
- Ensure compliance with BAM policies, contractual obligations, and industry best practice.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor documentation, reporting processes, and assurance activities across projects.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Develop and maintain stakeholder engagement and communication plans.
- Build and manage strategic partnerships that enhance social impact and support project delivery.
- Lead engagement initiatives with communities, disadvantaged groups, and underrepresented stakeholders.
- Represent BAM at internal and external forums, steering groups, and community events.
Socially Responsible Procurement
- Embed social sustainability requirements into procurement, contracts, and supply chain activities.
- Support suppliers and subcontractors to improve social value performance and maturity.
- Promote compliance with relevant legislation, including Modern Slavery and Human Rights requirements.
Work Winning
- Support business development activities through bid writing, tender submissions, case studies, local needs analysis, and client presentations.
- Contribute to post-tender interviews and early client engagement opportunities.
Diversity & Inclusion
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion across all activities in line with BAM and client strategies.
- Challenge non-inclusive behaviours and promote a culture of respect and belonging.
- Work collaboratively with clients and supply chain partners to advance shared D&I objectives.
Research, Analysis & Reporting
- Analyse performance data and provide insights to support strategic decision-making.
- Measure, monitor, and report social value outcomes against project, client, and business targets.
- Identify trends, opportunities, and improvements, implementing lessons learned to maximise impact and performance.
What do you bring to the role?
- Has a deep understanding of societal, industry and legislative drivers of social value. Informed by thought leadership, best practice and research related to Social Sustainability
- Demonstrates a track record of leading in a team environment, with management capabilities and experience
- A high degree of energy and self-motivation
- Previous experience in a similar role, applying social value and social sustainability principles preparing and delivering social value plans and leading performance measurement and reporting
- Ideally a degree level qualification or equivalent
- Experienced in stakeholder management/community engagement and managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders
- Champions Diversity and Inclusion related to social value and stakeholder management
- Knowledge and experience in National TOMs and expertise in using tools and techniques to assess social value outputs, impact and outcomes
- Demonstrable experience of writing high scoring tender responses and supporting tender submissions
- Excellent organisation / time management skills
- Enthusiasm and ability to inspire, influence and engage a broad cross section of stakeholders
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrate BAM Values: sustainable, inclusive, reliable, ownership, collaborative
- Be highly competent in MS Suite – especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- A willingness to travel regularly throughout the region, and UK&I as required, and ideally a full UK driving licence
