We are looking for a social video host to present, edit and produce video news and features for the Guardian’s multimedia department, with a particular focus on TikTok and Instagram and other social media platforms.

Your work will capture the essence of our journalism through sharp scripting and innovative visual storytelling. This includes, but is not limited to, explaining major events, such as our coverage of the recent solar eclipse [https://www.tiktok.com/@guardian/video/7671298998312996118]; high-energy political analysis, like our breakdown of the new prime minister's policy platform [https://www.tiktok.com/@guardian/video/7664564655628537110]; reporting on international disputes, such as the New York City mayor’s stance on the Koh-i-Noor diamond [https://www.instagram.com/reel/DXwjVNsoFGy/]; and global issues such as the under-16 social media ban. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or internal staff secondment.

About the role

  • Present, edit and produce shortform videos for the Guardian’s social media accounts, including, but not limited to, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube shorts
  • Work with colleagues in the video and social teams to create bespoke audience-focused videos across all areas of the Guardian’s journalism that engage and inform a global audience
  • Develop a personality and tone of voice for the Guardian’s flagship social media accounts, in collaboration with social editors and multimedia leadership
  • Pitch stories to the social platforms editor and contribute towards the planning and production of journalism across our social media platforms
  • Produce scripts adhering to strict editorial standards of accuracy, fairness and balance
  • Source and verify video as required
  • Edit and produce social videos as required
  • Self-shoot video as required in studio or on location
  • Monitor and analyse social performance data within a culture of experimentation and learning, evolving best practices as required
  • Undertake and deliver training as required.

About you

  • Demonstrable experience appearing on camera and presenting short form video news
  • Experience writing and reporting scripts, ideally for social media, with a flair for distilling complex information into engaging and compelling narratives
  • Experience editing video in Premiere Pro is required, and knowledge of software including Photoshop, Figma and AfterEffects is an advantage
  • Experience filming and shooting video including self-shooting
  • A deep understanding of social video audiences and the news video ecosystem is a must, as well as a nuanced understanding of how to optimise content performance for each platform
  • Experience verifying video and using open source intelligence (OSINT)
  • Experience of working collaboratively with video producers, designers and editors in a high-pressure environment and working to tight deadlines
  • Able to manage multiple projects at once including daily news and long-term stories
  • A creative person with an eye for new forms of storytelling, a deep interest in social media, and a desire to innovate
  • Journalistic training including knowledge of media law or equivalent experience in a national or international newsroom is required
  • You’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The minimum salary for this NUJ position is £51,661, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.
