About The Role
The Lead Software Developer role at HM Land Registry (HMLR) offers an exciting opportunity to lead and shape digital transformation projects that support land and property ownership across England and Wales. As a vital member of the technical leadership team, you will oversee a team of developers, guiding the design, development, and maintenance of critical software systems. This permanent position provides a chance to influence technological strategies, contribute to innovative solutions, and work on both existing platforms and new initiatives. The role is based across 14 UK locations with flexible, hybrid working arrangements, fostering a healthy work-life balance. The successful candidate will earn a competitive salary ranging from £58,500 to £72,700, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package including a significant pension contribution, holiday entitlement, and various employee support programs.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in software development, demonstrating a strong technical background and leadership capabilities. Proven experience operating at a senior developer level, with a history of mentoring or guiding development teams, is essential. Candidates should have a solid understanding of supporting and maintaining legacy systems, alongside experience working across multiple technology stacks. Familiarity with technologies such as HTML, CSS, Python, Flask, Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, RabbitMQ, DB2, and AWS is preferred, although specific language expertise is not mandatory. Strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication abilities, and a proactive approach to continuous learning and development are also required to succeed in this role.

Responsibilities
The Lead Software Developer will be responsible for a broad range of tasks, including:
- Contributing to software design and technical decision-making
- Refining requirements
- Ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions
- Collaborating closely with architects, product owners, and delivery teams
- Overseeing the entire software development lifecycle—covering development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support
- Leading and supporting a team of developers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to foster professional growth within your team
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring systems are maintained effectively and enhanced over time
- Working on both existing systems and new development projects, requiring a flexible and strategic approach to technology management
