Software Developer
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Software Developer to join our Digital and Innovation Team. The energy industry is rapidly changing, underpinned by increased digitalisation and as the company responsible for powering everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, Northern Powergrid is at the forefront of delivering a power network that meets the region's needs now and in the future. As a founding member of Northern Powergrid's in-house Software Engineering Team you will be responsible for the designing, building, testing and shipping of features for new applications and APIs across a modern stack. The successful candidate will represent the engineering view when working with colleagues across Digital and Innovation, shaping how problems are framed and how solutions are built.
Along with a competitive salary of between £45,000 - £55,000 we also offer:
- Annual leave of 25 days + bank holiday entitlement
- Enrolment into our Pension Scheme, with a generous company contribution (5% employee / 10% employer)
- 15% Performance Bonus
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, test, and ship features for new applications and APIs: Working across a modern stack (React/TypeScript front ends, .NET back ends).
- Contribute to mobile applications for our field teams: Built with React Native alongside our web stack, so that colleagues working out on the network have tools that work wherever they are.
- Practise test-driven development: Writing automated tests that run in our CI/CD pipelines so we can change our systems confidently.
- Build and deploy containerised services to the cloud: Primarily Azure with aspects of AWS and OCI.
- Develop and consume APIs: Bringing together business data from across our technology estate.
- Use modern AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate delivery: Applying professional judgement to review, test, and validate all code regardless of how it was produced.
- Contribute to practical AI-assisted and agentic engineering patterns for the team: Covering coding, testing, documentation, workflow, and developer experience.
- Take part in code reviews and pairing: Ensuring quality is built in and knowledge is shared.
- Represent the engineering view across Digital and Innovation: Working with our Product and Innovation teams to help shape solutions and ensuring policies are adhered to.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent practical experience
- 3 years+ experience of building production software in a modern language (e.g. TypeScript/JavaScript/ C#, Java/ Python).
- Solid grounding in automated testing and a willingness to work test-first.
- Experience with web technologies and relational databases.
- Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows.
- Practical experience of AI-assisted development, or a strong interest in applying these tools responsibly to improve engineering flow, code quality, and delivery pace.
- Clear written and spoken communication.
- A collaborative approach with the confidence to represent the engineering view when working with the wider team.

Desirable
- Experience with React and Typescript or .NET (C#)
- Experience with Docker / containers and a major cloud platform.
- Experience building or integrating APIs.
- Experience building mobile applications (React Native).
- Experience working in regulated industries, utilities, or other critical infrastructure.
- Interest in the energy sector and the transition to net zero.
