Software Developer – Gloucestershire – On Site – Permanent 37.5 hours per week – £70,000 - £77,000 per annum – DV Clearance
Our client is looking for an experienced Software Developer with strong Java and C++ skills to build high-performance backend solutions in a secure defence environment.
You'll need 5+ years of commercial development experience and must be SC Cleared with a willingness to undergo DV Clearance.
This is a senior-level role with real technical leadership responsibility.
Working Patterns and location – Fully on site
The Key Responsibilities of a Software Developer:
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend software in Java and C++ within Linux environments.
- Lead technical design and implementation of software components, services, and APIs.
- Provide technical mentoring and leadership to junior and mid-level engineers.
- Conduct code reviews and enforce software engineering best practices across the team.
- Build, maintain, and improve RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed applications.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices using tools such as GitLab and Jenkins.
- Containerise applications using Docker for scalable and efficient deployment.
- Collaborate with customers and cross-functional teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.

Below is a list of Key Skills required for a Software Developer, however you will not be expected to have everything:
- 5+ years of commercial software development experience in Java and/or C++ within Linux environments.
- Strong knowledge of software architecture, design patterns, and object-oriented programming principles.
- Experience developing enterprise-scale backend applications, RESTful APIs, and distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and reactive programming frameworks such as Spring Reactive.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.
- Experience with containerisation technologies, particularly Docker.
- Strong knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git, Bitbucket, or GitLab.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments with strong problem-solving ability.
The client would also like to see some of the below, but this is not essential:
- Experience with GitLab pipelines for automated build and deployment workflows.
- Familiarity with ElasticSearch and Kibana for log management and data visualisation.
- Knowledge of NoSQL database technologies such as MongoDB.
- Experience with messaging platforms such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Familiarity with ScalaTest or other Scala-based testing frameworks.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
