Software Engineer – Python / AI
£65,000–£85,000 + Equity | London (1 day/week)
Did you know that food accounts for roughly a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions?
Yet measuring its environmental impact can take businesses months of manual work.
This climate-tech startup is using AI to reduce that process from six months to five minutes, helping food businesses move beyond measuring emissions to actually reducing them.
Founded by two Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs, the company already works with 100+ customers, including GAIL's, Wahaca, 25+ UK universities and UEFA - and now they're looking for software engineer #4 to join the team.
The engineering challenge
You'll build software that processes years of messy purchasing data, identifies and structures product information, and produces accurate carbon assessments in minutes.
The work combines backend engineering, data-intensive systems and production AI, including:
- LLMs and agentic systems: Develop AI-powered ingestion pipelines, agentic workflows and intelligent data processing to automate complex manual tasks.
- Backend and data engineering: Design Python services, APIs, relational data models and efficient processing systems capable of handling large, inconsistent datasets.
- Product engineering: Build carbon calculation engines, reporting dashboards and customer-facing features, taking ownership from initial problem through to production.
- Stack: Python, Django/FastAPI, SQL, AWS, React, LLMs and AI-assisted development tools.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Who they're looking for
You'll probably have a few years of commercial software engineering experience, but what you've built and owned matters far more than how long you've been doing it.
They're particularly interested in engineers who:
- Have owned substantial features or systems in production, making architectural decisions, solving problems independently and taking responsibility for the outcome.
- Have strong Python fundamentals, including experience designing APIs, working with relational databases and building reliable backend systems.
- Have built with AI, whether integrating LLMs into products, developing agentic workflows or using AI tools to tackle unfamiliar engineering challenges.
- Think beyond the code, understanding customer problems, evaluating technical trade-offs and taking features from idea through to production.
- Care about the mission, with a genuine interest in using technology to help businesses understand and reduce their environmental impact.
