About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Engineer to join Bauer Media Audio's new in-house software engineering hub in Manchester. This pivotal role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities within a dynamic, collaborative environment. As a Lead Engineer, you will oversee a software engineering squad, guiding technical decisions, mentoring team members, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions that power our innovative audio platform. You will work closely with the Director of Engineering and cross-disciplinary leaders to align your team's work with strategic product goals. Your leadership will foster a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and inclusivity, creating an environment where every engineer can thrive and contribute meaningfully to our mission of delivering exceptional audio experiences across Europe.
Qualifications
- Extensive hands-on experience in software engineering, with proficiency in both frontend and backend development to guide technical decisions and review code effectively.
- Deep expertise in core technologies such as Java Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka, and TypeScript/React, with the ability to lead architectural discussions and technical direction.
- Strong understanding of software architecture principles, including domain-driven design, service boundaries, and event-driven communication.
- Experience with modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, containerization, version control, testing strategies, and observability.
- Knowledge of security best practices throughout the development lifecycle and familiarity with AI trends and AI-assisted development tools.
- Proven leadership skills with a servant-leadership mindset, capable of mentoring, managing stakeholder expectations, and fostering collaboration across teams.
- Experience leading or mentoring within a product-led, multidisciplinary organization with a track record of delivering high-quality solutions.
- Agile delivery experience, with familiarity in methodologies such as SCRUM, and adaptability to evolving business priorities.
- Industry experience in media, audio streaming, or consumer platforms is advantageous.

Responsibilities
- Support the growth and development of your engineering team through regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and tailored growth plans.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, technical confidence, and shared ownership.
- Actively contribute to your squad's technical delivery by writing, reviewing, and ensuring high standards of code quality, maintainability, and best practices.
- Guide architectural decisions and technical strategies within your team, aligning with broader organizational goals and technical direction.
- Plan and manage squad capacity, forecast hiring needs, and allocate resources effectively to meet project deadlines and delivery commitments.
- Participate in product roadmap discussions, refinement sessions, and sprint planning, providing technical insights and surfacing dependencies or risks early.
- Establish and uphold coding standards and review processes, tracking and managing technical debt to balance feature delivery with system health.
- Engage in incident management duties, providing hands-on support during high-pressure situations, and advocating for a 'you build it, you run it' DevOps culture.
- Ensure your team is equipped to deploy, operate, and support the systems they develop, fostering operational excellence and resilience.
