BACKEND ENGINEER (JAVA) - Must be based in NI (No sponsorship available)

A global technology company is growing its engineering presence in Northern Ireland and is hiring Java backend engineers to work on a large-scale, business-critical platform used by enterprise customers internationally.

The organisation operates across multiple global markets and builds software where reliability, security and performance are fundamental. The Northern Ireland team is still growing, giving engineers the opportunity to join at a relatively early stage and have genuine influence over how the local engineering function develops.

The role

This is a backend-focused engineering role working on a large distributed platform with significant scale and availability requirements.

You will design, build and maintain Java services in a modern cloud environment, contribute to ongoing platform modernisation work, and take ownership of features from initial design through to deployment and production.

The engineering culture is strongly focused on ownership, automation and building software that can be operated reliably at scale.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Why it's worth a look

This is a good opportunity for someone who wants to work beyond standard CRUD applications and get exposure to more complex backend engineering problems.

You will be working with distributed systems, high-throughput services and modern cloud infrastructure, while joining a Northern Ireland engineering team that still has considerable room to grow.

Engineers are given ownership of their work and are expected to contribute to technical decisions rather than simply picking up predefined tickets.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, build and maintain Java-based backend services.
  • Work with distributed data stores and other components across a large-scale platform.
  • Contribute to the automation used to build, deploy and operate services in cloud environments.
  • Work closely with engineering and reliability teams to support production systems and troubleshoot live issues.
  • Take features from technical design through development, testing and deployment.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews and continuous improvement across the engineering team.
