Software Engineer
Location: London (4 days onsite per week)
Salary: £95,000 - £120,000 + share options
Reporting to: Technical Director
About the Role
We are building a mission-critical integration platform that enables sensors, autonomous systems, command applications and edge services from different vendors to operate as a single interoperable ecosystem. The platform is designed to function across disconnected, intermittent and low-bandwidth environments and is deployed into highly secure Kubernetes environments.
As a Core Platform Engineer, you will help shape the architecture of the platform's core services, including gateway capabilities, store-and-forward messaging, observability and operational tooling. AI-assisted development is widely used, with engineers focusing on architecture, governance, validation and technical assurance.
Your First 90 Days
- Deliver a successful multi-site demonstration across distributed environments.
- Integrate a previously unseen data source into the test environment within 48 hours.
- Support a fully reproducible release process, including offline build verification and seamless credential rotation under live traffic.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to platform architecture and capture decisions through ADRs, interface contracts and automated testing.
- Define and validate standards for secure service communication and interoperability.
- Review, validate and assure code and artefacts generated through AI-assisted engineering workflows.
- Own the reliability, security and maintainability of platform components.

Areas You Will Lead and Review
Software Engineering
- Go development with a standard library-first approach.
- Strong emphasis on modular architecture and clear dependency boundaries.
- API gateway integration and extension using gRPC and policy-driven controls.
Security & Identity
- Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), X.509 certificates and mutual TLS.
- JWT-based authentication and JWKS management.
- Cryptographic key rotation in live environments.
- Offline verification of signed configurations and artefacts.
Access Control & Policy
- Attribute-based access control (ABAC).
- Identity federation and claims resolution across multiple identity providers.
Kubernetes & Platform Engineering
- Helm chart development with documented configuration contracts.
- Deployments across managed Kubernetes, edge Kubernetes and sovereign cloud environments.
- Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform or OpenTofu.
Testing & Quality
- Multi-layer automated testing strategies.
- Conformance, resilience and release-gate validation.
- Testing in degraded and disconnected network conditions.
- Reproducible and hermetic build processes.

Observability
- OpenTelemetry-compatible metrics, logs and tracing.
- Operational insight and performance monitoring across distributed systems.
Delivery
- GitOps-driven deployments.
- CI/CD pipelines with Git as the sole source of change.
- Secure identity federation for workload authentication.
Ways of Working
- Architectural decisions are documented and reviewed with peers before implementation.
- Modern AI-assisted engineering practices are embedded throughout the development lifecycle.
- GitOps and automation-first delivery principles.
About You
Essential
- Active SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain it.
- Strong commercial experience building Go applications on Kubernetes.
- Experience operating within regulated, security-conscious or customer-controlled environments.
- Ability to balance architectural thinking with hands-on delivery.
Desirable
- Experience with API gateways and service mesh technologies.
- Exposure to disconnected, edge or distributed systems.
- Experience working with secure cloud environments and infrastructure automation.
- Knowledge of observability frameworks and modern platform engineering practices.
