Software Engineer / Senior Software Engineer - Financial Services
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne – five days per week in the office
Salary: Highly competitive and flexible
FryerMiles is partnering with a rapidly growing specialist technology consultancy to recruit exceptional Software Engineers for its expanding Newcastle team. The business delivers complex software, data and AI solutions for major organisations across financial services, investment management and other technically demanding sectors. These are hands-on engineering positions for people who enjoy solving difficult problems, collaborating directly with clients and taking software from initial concept through to reliable production use.
The Role
You will work on varied and technically challenging projects, potentially including new application development, order-management platforms, legacy modernisation programmes and proofs of concept for major institutional clients. Projects will vary according to client requirements, giving you exposure to different technologies, industries and engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing and maintaining production applications and services
- Working across the complete software lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, development, testing, deployment and support
- Building high-performance APIs, integrations and data-driven applications
- Working with modern cloud environments, SQL databases and deployment tooling
- Contributing to code and design reviews and championing high engineering standards
- Collaborating directly with clients to turn complex requirements into practical technical solutions
- Taking ownership of features and projects from initial idea through to production delivery

About You
Most suitable candidates will have approximately 2–8 years of commercial software-engineering experience, although exceptional engineers outside this range may also be considered.
You will ideally offer:
- Programming: Deep commercial expertise in at least one modern general-purpose programming language
- Preferred Technology: Java experience, ideally including Spring or Spring Boot, is particularly desirable
- Alternative Languages: Strong C++, C#/.NET, Python, Go or other programming backgrounds will also be considered where you can demonstrate excellent engineering fundamentals
- Engineering Fundamentals: Strong problem-solving, SQL, REST API and software-design skills
- Cloud and DevOps: Exposure to AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes or modern CI/CD practices
- Delivery: Experience of automated testing, code review and modern agile software delivery
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to work directly with clients and non-technical stakeholders

Financial-services experience across banking, wealth management, pensions, trading or investment management would be advantageous, but it is not essential. Applications are welcomed from excellent engineers across all industry backgrounds.
Academic Background
Academic excellence forms an important part of the selection process. Candidates will typically hold a first-class or 2:1 degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or another closely related technical discipline from a leading university.
Location and Commute
These positions are based in the Newcastle upon Tyne office five days per week. Candidates must already live within a realistic daily commute or be genuinely committed to relocating to the North East. Relocation can be discussed as part of the recruitment process.
Salaries are highly competitive, flexible and tailored to the experience and ability of each individual.
