About The Role

The Staff Software Engineer - AI at Moody’s is a pivotal role responsible for designing, developing, and leading the implementation of scalable AI platforms and intelligent applications. This role requires a highly experienced technical leader with a deep understanding of AI, cloud-native systems, and backend development. You will act as a hands-on contributor and mentor, guiding the technical direction of AI solutions from prototype to production. Your expertise will be instrumental in building enterprise-grade AI applications that leverage large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, and orchestration frameworks to deliver innovative solutions that address complex business challenges. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, product managers, and engineering leaders, is essential to translate strategic initiatives into practical, high-performance AI systems that support real-time and batch workloads at scale.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on backend systems and cloud-native services
  • Expert-level programming skills in Python, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages
  • Deep expertise in building enterprise AI applications utilizing large language models, AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation, and prompt engineering
  • Proven ability to take AI solutions from prototype to production, balancing performance, scalability, and security
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, with experience using Docker, Kubernetes, and related technologies
  • Experience designing APIs, distributed systems, data pipelines, and working with databases like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and vector databases
  • Ability to influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and perform code and design reviews
  • Deep understanding of AI ethics, responsible AI practices, and model lifecycle management

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and lead the delivery of scalable AI platforms and intelligent applications that incorporate emerging AI capabilities into production environments
  • Act as a hands-on technical leader by designing, coding, reviewing, and debugging production systems supporting AI-powered products
  • Build scalable backend services, APIs, data and inference pipelines, and platform capabilities to support real-time and batch AI workloads at enterprise scale
  • Implement advanced large language model applications, including retrieval-augmented generation, prompt orchestration, and model optimization
  • Make key technical decisions ensuring code maintainability, system performance, security, reliability, and cost efficiency
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices through code reviews, automated testing, observability, and operational excellence
  • Champion machine learning operations (MLOps) practices, including model lifecycle management, deployment pipelines, and continuous monitoring
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate strategic goals into robust technical solutions
  • Develop reusable frameworks, libraries, and tooling to accelerate AI development across teams
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies through prototypes and proof-of-concept builds, guiding implementation strategies and trade-offs
  • Mentor and coach engineers through technical guidance, pairing, and review processes to foster professional growth and technical excellence
