About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team. In this hands-on leadership role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend systems that support our global operations. You will drive technical excellence by setting architectural standards, guiding best practices, and mentoring engineers. As a recognized domain authority, you will shape the technical vision, influence cross-team collaboration, and actively contribute to the continuous improvement of our engineering processes. Your expertise in backend development, event-driven architectures, and cloud technologies will be vital in delivering innovative solutions that enhance our customer experience and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a senior contributor or lead in a high-performing software engineering team
  • Extensive hands-on experience coding in Golang or another strictly typed language in a commercial environment
  • Strong background in backend engineering with expertise in implementing event-driven architectures
  • Proficiency in designing, building, and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs
  • Deep understanding of high-quality code standards, architecture best practices, and scalable software design
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in production environments
  • Database design experience across relational and non-relational databases
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and develop engineering talent
  • Experience working within agile methodologies, focusing on delivering business value
  • Ability to influence technical direction without direct authority and to foster collaborative relationships
  • Strong communication skills with a pragmatic and solution-oriented mindset

Responsibilities

  • Design and document clear architectural diagrams and key decision records accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ensure adherence to engineering best practices, including quality, testing, and operational excellence
  • Lead the development and delivery of scalable backend services leveraging AWS serverless technologies such as Lambda, EventBridge, SQS, and DynamoDB
  • Design and build APIs (REST & GraphQL) to support customer-facing features and internal systems
  • Manage complex technical challenges, including leading on business-critical incidents and unknown problems under pressure
  • Delegate low-risk technical decisions while owning high-risk, high-impact choices
  • Embed CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and observability practices into all engineering work
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Engineering Managers to optimize team productivity and impact
  • Create an environment that empowers engineers to own their work, share knowledge, and continuously improve
  • Mentor engineers at all levels, supporting their growth through coaching, learning opportunities, and constructive feedback
  • Set and communicate a clear technical vision and architectural direction for the team
  • Influence cross-team technical strategy and standardize best practices across platform engineering teams
  • Build strong peer relationships, share knowledge openly, and work collectively to elevate engineering standards
  • Propose and lead initiatives that align with Gymshark’s long-term technical and business goals
