Salary: £40,000+ depending on experience and capability

Start Date: Autumn 2026

About SpeakUnique

Spun out of the University of Edinburgh's world-leading Informatics institute, SpeakUnique create health monitoring technology and provide personalised synthetic voices for patients.

We are developing scalable and potentially language-agnostic vocal biomarkers to measure the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Combining deep speech science and AI expertise with large, medically characterised voice datasets, SpeakUnique have demonstrated strong performance in detecting and tracking diseases. The company is now moving towards prospective clinical validation. In conjunction with this, we create state-of-the-art personalised synthetic voices for individuals with medical conditions who have lost, will lose, or have never had the ability to speak.

We are based in the heart of Edinburgh's AI and tech hub at the Bayes Centre.

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our small multi-disciplinary team. You will play a key role in building, maintaining, and scaling the digital infrastructure, cloud platform, and web and mobile applications through which we deliver our voice technologies to end-users and clinical partners.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

We are looking for someone who combines strong software engineering skills with initiative, sound judgement and accountability. You should be comfortable identifying problems as well as solving them, making pragmatic technical decisions and leading projects while working closely with colleagues across software development, speech science, clinical research, and product development.

The role combines core full-stack engineering with opportunities to contribute to mobile application development, accessible UI/UX, and automated testing and deployment. As a small and growing company, we value engineers who think beyond the immediate task: building software that is reliable and maintainable while making thoughtful choices about future scalability.

Success in this role means that you will improve the way we build technology: making our systems more robust, our development processes more effective, and our products easier and more reliable to use. The quality of your work will help us translate SpeakUnique's technology into meaningful improvements in patients’ lives and healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Design, maintain, and scale web applications, admin platforms, and underlying system architectures.
  • Debug, test, and deploy updates to frontend systems, backend APIs, and core voice-processing engines.
  • Ensure seamless interoperation between cloud services, database layers, and user interface components.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code primarily in JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and SQL.
  • Implement robust unit/integration testing and manage deployment pipelines.
  • Collaborate in agile engineering workflows (sprint planning, code reviews, and retrospectives).
