I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The backend is primarily Java, with React used on the frontend and AWS across the cloud environment.
Engineers from C#,.NET, Go or Python backgrounds are also encouraged to apply. You don't need commercial Java experience, but you must be happy to transition to Java and use it as your primary backend language.

We're looking for an engineer with strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building production applications.
You'll ideally have:
- Commercial backend software engineering experience
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming
- Experience designing or developing APIs
- Good knowledge of SQL and relational databases
- An understanding of software design, testing and maintainability
- Experience working within a collaborative engineering team
- An interest in building scalable and reliable systems
- The ability to discuss technical decisions and the trade-offs behind them
Experience with Java, Spring Boot, React, AWS, NoSQL, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, CI/CD, observability or AI-assisted development would be beneficial, but you aren't expected to have worked with everything listed.
