Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era
At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. We believe in harnessing AI responsibly to unlock new possibilities, and we’re looking for individuals who use it intentionally to solve problems, accelerate outcomes, and expand what’s possible in their role. Our purpose is to help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers who shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.
We are looking for a Software Engineer II, backend-oriented, to join our Data Experience squad. This role centers on backend services, APIs, working across data modeling, SQL, event and integration flows, and product-facing workflows. You're building backend and data-informed features that power product experience.
You should be comfortable taking a reasonably scoped business or customer problem, breaking it down, surfacing trade-offs, and shipping a reliable solution, and know when to loop in a senior engineer or escalate as scope or risk grows. We're looking for someone who raises their own bar quickly and is building toward needing less direction over time.
What You'll Do
- Design and build reliable backend services and APIs that power product workflows.
- Work with data models, SQL, and event-driven flows to support product and backend features.
- Work with UI surfaces when needed to deliver end-to-end solutions, without owning frontend architecture.
- Break down well-scoped problems into concrete technical plans, partnering with senior engineers on more ambiguous ones.
- Contribute to production health (monitoring, alerting, logging, debugging, and runbooks) for the systems you build.
- Work with product, design, infrastructure, support, and other engineering teams.
- Improve quality through tests, code review, observability, and simpler designs.
- Use data and production evidence to validate decisions.
- Participate in incident response and troubleshooting when systems don't behave as expected, escalating and collaborating as needed.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Who You Are
- You have 3+ years of back-end focused software engineering experience, with solid backend skills in Java, Scala, Kotlin, Go, or a similar language
- Education: Preferred minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience
- You have strong SQL and data modeling fundamentals, and you're comfortable using them to inform backend and product decisions
- You have experience building APIs, services, and integrations, and are developing comfort with distributed systems, event-driven flows, caching, retries, rate limits, and the many ways production systems fail
- You can work across layers of a system, including UI/front-end work when a problem calls for it, but your primary strength and focus is backend
- You write automated tests, review code thoughtfully, and use logs, metrics, dashboards, and tracing to understand how your systems behave in production
- You stay calm and clear during incidents, and you can explain your own trade-offs to both engineers and non-engineers
- You have a bias toward simple, reliable solutions and write code that other engineers can follow and maintain
- You take ownership of your outcomes, not just tickets. You ask what problem you're solving before jumping to implementation, validate risky assumptions early, and escalate when risk or scope is unclear
- You don't take shortcuts around process, security, or production safety
Nice to have
- React/TypeScript or similar frontend experience
- Merchant- or customer-facing product work
- Third-party integrations (OAuth, account linking, external APIs)
- Redis/caching/queues at scale
- Experience with analytics and event data products
