I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We’re seeking a Mid/Senior Backend Engineer to help build and scale the backend systems powering a complex, data-intensive platform.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role - ideal for someone who enjoys being given challenging problems to solve, taking ownership of the solution and seeing their work all the way through to production.

You’ll work across real-time and analytical data processing, designing and improving services where latency, throughput, reliability and scalability are critical. You’ll have plenty of input into technical decisions and be expected to understand the trade-offs behind the systems you’re building.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong Java / Kotlin / Python / Typescript engineering skills - building production-grade backend systems
  • Experience designing and building distributed, data-intensive or high-scale systems
  • Understanding of system design trade-offs - latency, throughput, consistency, performance and cost
  • Cloud experience - AWS or GCP
  • Exposure to technologies such as Kafka, Flink, Redis or Postgres
  • Experience owning software end-to-end - from shaping the solution through to running it in production
  • Strong communicator who enjoys working closely with engineering, product and other stakeholders
  • Passion for robust engineering - observability, testing, reliability and performance
