About The Role

The Lead Software Engineer / Team Lead (Java Spring Boot) role at Client Server offers an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and leadership-oriented professional to make a significant impact within the organization. Based in Manchester with flexible WFH arrangements, this position involves guiding a small, high-performing development team responsible for building and maintaining real-time sports betting applications. The role requires a blend of hands-on technical expertise and team management skills, with approximately 80% of the time dedicated to architecture, coding, and technical problem-solving, and 20% to coaching, mentoring, and team development.

As a central figure in the development process, you will collaborate closely with product owners and stakeholders to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of features and enhancements. Promoting best practices in software engineering, fostering a developer-friendly environment, and driving continuous improvement initiatives are key aspects of this role. This position provides an excellent platform for a proactive leader who is passionate about technology and team growth to thrive in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in backend software engineering with proven leadership experience. Essential qualifications include:

  • Extensive experience with Java and Spring Boot development
  • Proven track record in technical and team leadership, mentoring, and coaching
  • Deep understanding of software engineering best practices and principles
  • Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD)
  • Solid knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals such as Object-Oriented Programming, multithreading, Design Patterns, and Data Structures
  • Comfortable working with agentic AI coding techniques
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage stakeholders effectively

Desirable but not essential skills include experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS cloud services. A proactive, pragmatic approach combined with a collaborative mindset will be highly valued.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Lead Software Engineer / Team Lead include:

  • Providing technical leadership and mentorship to a small development team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence
  • Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-performance backend systems using Java Spring Boot
  • Collaborating with Product Owners and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions
  • Overseeing the full software development lifecycle, including planning, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
  • Implementing best practices in coding, testing, and deployment to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Promoting continuous improvement through code reviews, retrospectives, and process optimizations
  • Creating an environment that encourages innovation, focus, and professional growth for team members
  • Staying current with emerging technologies and integrating relevant tools and frameworks into projects
