About the Role

Epassi's purpose is to boost everyday well-being. We are a leading provider of employee benefit solutions across Europe, established in Finland in 2007. We were the first company to launch a mobile-payable employee benefit payment solution in Europe, and have been recognised by the Financial Times as one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe on multiple occasions. We are an AI-native engineering organisation — we build with AI tools, we iterate with AI tools, and we expect our engineers to embrace this as a core part of how great software gets made.

Your Mission at Epassi

You will be a core contributor on a cross-functional product team, building and evolving backend services using Java Spring Boot that power Epassi's product vision. We are adding this role to strengthen our backend engineering capacity and bring meaningful features to life reliably and at quality. You will take ownership of defined service areas, work confidently across the stack, and grow into greater technical responsibility over time.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Your Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain high-quality backend services using Java Spring Boot, taking ownership of your work from implementation through testing and release
  • Write clean, secure, and testable code following agreed engineering standards, making it easy for your team to review, understand, and build upon
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs in collaboration with Frontend Engineers, ensuring reliable contracts and well-handled edge cases
  • Ensure code quality through unit and integration tests, thorough code reviews, and participation in refactoring efforts
  • Debug and resolve issues in both development and production environments, communicating clearly about root causes and fixes
  • Identify and flag technical debt within your areas of ownership, proposing improvements as your confidence grows
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes, developing your understanding of how services are built and released
  • Participate actively in agile ceremonies — planning, refinements, reviews, and retrospectives — and document your technical decisions

What You Should Bring

  • 2–4 years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 1 year building backend services with Java in a professional setting. A Computer Science degree or equivalent is not required — we care about what you can build and how you think, not where you studied.
  • Java & Spring Boot (solid): Solid hands-on experience building backend services with Java and Spring Boot, including REST APIs, dependency injection, and the Spring application lifecycle
  • Data persistence: Working knowledge of JPA/Hibernate and relational databases — writing queries, understanding entity relationships, and basic schema design
  • API design: Comfortable designing and implementing RESTful APIs with a good understanding of HTTP semantics, status codes, and error handling
  • Testing: Familiarity with writing unit and integration tests in Java (e.g. JUnit, Mockito); experience with test-driven development is a plus
  • Version control: Confident use of Git, including branching strategies, pull requests, and resolving merge conflicts in a team environment
  • CI/CD basics: Awareness of CI/CD concepts and experience working within an automated build and deployment pipeline
  • AI-native development: Familiarity with AI coding tools such as Copilot or Cursor is a plus — we're an AI-native team and are happy to help you develop this further
  • Containerisation: Basic familiarity with Docker and how containerised services are built and run
