Software Engineer - Java
Ready to take your career global? Make your mark at one of the biggest names in payments. We’re looking for a Software Engineer - Java to join our ever-evolving WPG team and help shape the future of global commerce.
Whilst web development skills are crucial, a background in payments and fintech would be extremely beneficial.
What You’ll Own
You will be working on one of the largest-by-volume global payment platforms in the world, focusing on:
- Robustness, security, and capacity capable of processing over 800 transactions every second and exceeding 10 million successful payments every day
- Design and development of solutions in Java, SQL, and PL/SQL for an ecommerce payments gateway, in alignment with:
- Needs of a high-capacity, mission-critical 24/7 service with 5 nines uptime
- Product specifications and business value drivers
- Worldpay architectural and software engineering principles
- Department standards and practices (code quality, agile methods, technical debt control)
- Close collaboration with QA engineers, code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing
- Active partnership with engineers in the UK and US
- Participation in retrospectives, technical debt resolution, and team improvements
- Periodic availability for release support and deployments outside standard hours
- Full engagement across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including design refinement, release, and maintenance of software solutions

What You’ll Bring
You will have:
Essential Skills & Experience
- Ability to build secure, clean, and testable Java-based distributed applications in a Linux development environment
- Strong grasp of relational database concepts (e.g., Oracle) and an appreciation for architectural design patterns
- A dynamic, can-do attitude, prioritising under pressure and contributing to continuous improvement
- Experience with large codebases and version control systems (e.g., Git & GitHub)
- Linux proficiency (bash, ksh, ssh, etc.)
- Essential skills:
- Java
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript
- REST APIs
- Spring Boot
- JBoss, J2EE, JSP, Servlets
- Gradle / Maven
- Databases (Oracle, DDL, SQL)
- Basic Networking
Nice-to-Have Skills & Experience
- C/C++
- Payment technologies (e.g., APACS, IFSF, Google Pay)
- Front-end frameworks: Angular, AlpineJS, Bootstrap
- Database tools: DBeaver, SQL Developer
- IDEs: VS Code, Eclipse
- Business Intelligence tools: Keyfactor, Sectigo
- Cloud/Azure/AWS knowledge
- Authentication/SSO/MFA, TLS, PKI
- Testing/CI/CD: Selenium, JUnit, Snyk, Checkmarx
- Docker, Podman
- Data formats: XML, JSON, YAML
Bonus
- Innovation-focused with knowledge of BDD and best-in-class software engineering tools
- Passion for AI and ability to leverage AI tools in daily work
- Experience with agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe)
- Background in global online business or cryptography/security, especially mission-critical, high-availability systems

About the Team
You will join a cross-functional team comprising:
- Developers
- Test engineers
- Scrum Masters
- Product Owners
- Analysts
Each team owns its backlog, from kick-off to post-live and follows agile practices (Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe). Teams integrate and deliver continuously, ensuring iterative feedback loops.
