Senior Lead Software Engineer – Backend

Location: Canary Wharf, London
Working: 5 days per week onsite

We are looking for Senior Lead Software Engineers to join a major banking technology programme, working as embedded members of product-focused engineering squads from our Canary Wharf office.

You will be responsible for designing, developing and supporting mission-critical, cloud-native backend services, contributing across the full software development lifecycle. The roles require strong backend engineering skills, technical leadership and the ability to work in a highly collaborative and regulated Financial Services environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and support Java-based backend services and microservices.
  • Build scalable, resilient and highly available distributed systems.
  • Develop REST APIs, messaging and event-driven solutions.
  • Apply modern engineering practices including Domain-Driven Design, automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Support production systems, incident management and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to technical architecture and engineering decisions.
  • Work closely with Product, Engineering and Business stakeholders.
  • Mentor engineers and promote high standards of software development.
  • Drive automation and responsible use of AI-assisted development tools.

Essential Experience

  • Strong commercial Java backend development experience.
  • Experience with cloud-native applications and microservices.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and REST APIs.
  • Experience with messaging / asynchronous processing.
  • Strong automated testing and CI/CD experience.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical production systems.
  • Technical leadership, mentoring and stakeholder management experience.
  • Experience working in Agile engineering environments.

Desirable

  • AWS, Banking/Financial Services, Payments, Visa/Mastercard and high-volume transaction processing.

Senior Lead Software Engineer – Java / Kotlin

This position has a stronger focus on Java/Kotlin, product engineering and technical direction. We're particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Strong Java and/or Kotlin experience.
  • JVM ecosystem knowledge.
  • Experience building scalable, customer-facing platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience influencing technical direction across teams.
  • A strong background in mentoring and engineering best practice.

Both roles are senior, hands-on engineering positions and require candidates to be onsite in Canary Wharf 5 days per week.
