About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer / Team Lead with expertise in Java Spring Boot to join our team in Manchester, with the flexibility to work from home. In this pivotal role, you will lead and inspire a small, high-performing development team focused on real-time sports betting applications. Your primary responsibility will be to balance technical leadership with hands-on development, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable software solutions. You will work closely with product owners and stakeholders to oversee the full software development lifecycle, promote best practices, and foster an environment of innovation and continuous improvement.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex systems utilizing the latest technologies within a diverse and supportive environment. You will have the chance to influence technical strategy, mentor team members, and contribute to the company's ongoing success in the gaming industry. The role is designed for a proactive leader who enjoys both coding and team development, with an approximate 80/20 split between technical architecture and coding versus people management and mentorship.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in backend software engineering, with proven experience in Java and Spring Boot development. You should have demonstrated leadership capabilities, including mentoring and coaching team members, and a passion for software engineering best practices. Familiarity with Test Driven Development (TDD) and a solid understanding of fundamental computer science concepts such as object-oriented programming, multithreading, design patterns, and data structures are essential.
Experience with agentic AI coding is advantageous, reflecting the company's commitment to cutting-edge technology. Candidates should be collaborative, pragmatic, and possess excellent communication skills to effectively manage stakeholder relationships. While not essential, experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS will be considered a plus, as these technologies are part of the company's broader tech ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a small development team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems using Java Spring Boot, ensuring high performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with Product Owners and stakeholders to define and prioritize features, oversee the full delivery lifecycle, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality software.
- Promote engineering best practices, including TDD, code reviews, and continuous integration, to maintain code quality and consistency.
- Drive technical excellence by establishing and enforcing coding standards, architecture guidelines, and best practices.
- Support team members’ professional growth through coaching, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and technical strategy, balancing innovation with practical implementation.
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and incorporate relevant technologies to enhance product offerings.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and implement scalable solutions.
