Software Engineer - Linux & Networking, OpenWRT

£45,000 - £70,000 DOE + Benefits

Fully Remote (UK)

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Software Engineer with strong Linux, OpenWRT, and networking expertise.

You'll work across embedded devices, networking platforms, and cloud-connected systems, building secure, reliable, and scalable solutions. This role is ideal for somebody who enjoys working close to the operating system, network stack, and hardware layer.

Who Are We Looking For?

Essential Skills

  • Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills
  • Commercial experience with OpenWRT including configuration, customisation, deployment, or development
  • Commercial Go development experience
  • Shell scripting experience
  • Embedded Linux experience including OpenWRT, Yocto, Buildroot, or ARM-based platforms
  • C programming experience
  • LTE and 5G networking knowledge
  • Experience with modem connectivity and communications
  • Strong networking expertise including routing, VPNs, NAT, DNS, DHCP, and MTU optimisation
  • Experience developing Linux services and daemon-based applications

Technical Knowledge

  • X.509 certificates, PKI, and mTLS
  • Secure device-to-cloud communications
  • Firmware and software update processes
  • Serial communications
  • GPIO, UART, SPI, and I2C interfaces
  • Linux networking internals
  • Diagnostics and troubleshooting across distributed environments

Desirable Experience

  • OpenWRT package development or firmware customisation
  • Wi-Fi technologies and wireless networking
  • Cellular modem frameworks
  • Linux kernel debugging
  • Rust exposure
  • Debian packaging
  • ARM hardware platforms
  • TPM or HSM technologies
  • JTAG and hardware debugging

Additional Requirements

  • Must be eligible and willing to undergo security clearance
  • Sponsorship is not available

What You'll Be Doing

  • Developing software for Linux and OpenWRT networking platforms
  • Enhancing embedded and cloud-connected systems
  • Building networking and connectivity solutions
  • Supporting secure communications technologies
  • Troubleshooting software, networking, and hardware issues
  • Developing automation and system tooling
  • Collaborating with engineering and product teams
  • Supporting product performance, reliability, and scalability
