Senior Software Engineer (JavaScript / Node.js)
Location: Remote - Anywhere in Europe - UK Hours must be worked
Contract: Initial 12 Months
We're looking for a Software Engineer with strong JavaScript and Node.js expertise to work on complex, large scale systems.
This role will suit engineers who enjoy solving difficult technical problems and who are comfortable discussing:
- Data structures
- Algorithms
- Complexity analysis
- System design
- Scalability
- Performance optimisation
- Engineering trade-offs
This is not a role focused purely on frameworks or UI development. We're looking for engineers who can reason about systems, design efficient solutions and build scalable software.
What You'll Be Working On
- Designing and building high-performance services using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Creating scalable distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
- Solving performance and optimisation challenges.
- Building reliable APIs and backend platforms.
- Designing solutions for real-world engineering problems with evolving requirements.
- Working closely with senior engineers on architecture and technical strategy.
- Improving observability, reliability and operational performance.

Essential Skills
Computer Science & Engineering Fundamentals
You should be comfortable discussing and applying:
- Data structures (Maps, Sets, Queues, Trees, Graphs, etc.)
- Algorithm design and optimisation
- Time and space complexity
- Performance analysis
- Debugging complex systems
- Software design patterns
- Scalability and reliability principles
Technical Experience
- Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript experience.
- Commercial Node.js development experience.
- Experience building production APIs and backend services.
- Experience with distributed systems or event-driven architectures.
- Experience working within cloud environments (AWS, Azure or GCP).
- Strong understanding of software architecture and system design.

Highly Desirable
- Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, SNS or similar messaging technologies.
- Microservices and serverless architectures.
- WebSockets and real-time systems.
- React and/or Next.js.
- Docker and Kubernetes.
- Infrastructure as Code.
- High-scale consumer platforms.
- Performance engineering experience.
Candidates should be comfortable explaining their thought process, discussing trade-offs and evolving an initial solution as requirements change.
