Software Engineer – PHP / Laravel
A fantastic opportunity for a Software Engineer to join a growing tech-for-good company building software that makes a positive difference to people’s everyday lives. Working within a collaborative engineering team, you will work on varied technical challenges, from developing new functionality to connecting systems and improving performance. This role would suit a Developer with commercial PHP and Laravel experience who enjoys hands-on development and solving problems alongside colleagues.
Location: Near Ipswich, Suffolk – hybrid working with mandatory office attendance every Tuesday and Friday. These days are fixed, so applicants must be able to meet this working pattern.
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Requirements for Software Engineer – PHP / Laravel:
- Commercial experience developing applications using PHP and Laravel
- Experience working with modern frontend frameworks or libraries, ideally React
- Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL
- Good understanding of object-oriented programming, software design patterns and testing
- Experience using Git-based source control
- A logical approach to problem-solving and the ability to translate requirements into working software
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with colleagues
- Comfortable adapting to changing requirements within a fast-paced development environment
- Experience with message queues and event-driven architecture is beneficial
- Experience with caching, containerisation or deployment tooling is beneficial

Responsibilities for Software Engineer – PHP / Laravel:
- Develop and improve PHP and Laravel applications, APIs and supporting services
- Build user-facing functionality and the backend systems that support it
- Work with engineers, QA testers and wider stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable software
- Contribute to integrations that allow applications and external systems to work together
- Investigate technical issues and help improve application security, performance and reliability
- Write tests, participate in code reviews and support software releases
- Contribute ideas to technical discussions and improvements to development practices
