About The Role
Go Car Credit is a specialist motor finance lender supporting those with less than perfect credit scores to get behind the wheel. Our hire purchase deals don’t just get people a great car – they give people the chance to rebuild their credit score too.
To support strategic growth, we’re looking to build out our in-house engineering team and are looking for a Mid-Level Software Engineer to support the next phase of platform growth and modernisation.
You will be joining the Business Change team during a time of major in-house technology buildout, where you will have real ownership and help to shape the future business critical platform!
Working hours are 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday, however due to the level of the role we would expect some flexibility.
Responsibilities
- Working on a high-volume application platform primarily built in Laravel, contributing to new feature development, platform improvements, APIs, integrations, and ongoing modernisation work.
- Working closely with senior engineers and technical leadership to develop new functionality, maintain and modernise existing applications, and improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of a business-critical platform.
- Developing and delivering new backend functionality using PHP and Laravel.
- Maintaining and improving the existing customer application platform.
- Supporting the ongoing migration and modernisation of legacy CakePHP components into Laravel.
- Balancing day-to-day BAU development with wider platform upgrade and improvement work.
- Designing, building, and consuming RESTful APIs and third-party integrations.
- Working with MySQL and relational databases to build reliable, performant solutions.
- Writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and participating in code reviews and contributing to improving engineering standards.
- Troubleshooting application issues and support production stability.
- Participating in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and reviews.
- Proactively identifying opportunities to improve code quality and platform performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
