Software Engineer – Production Automation & AI-Assisted Reliability
Location: UK – Remote
Contract dates: September 2026 – March 2027
Contract length: Six months
Working hours: 40 hours per week
Pay rate: £55 per hour PAYE
Role overview
An ICONIC GLOBAL TECH BRAND is looking for two experienced Software Engineers to support the backend systems behind a large-scale user-generated content application with a substantial daily user base. The application operates as a single product across multiple platforms. It runs natively on VR headsets and is also delivered to mobile and PC users through cloud streaming via Horizon Cross Screen.
This is primarily a backend production engineering and reliability role rather than a client-side or traditional full-stack development position. You will work alongside the runtime and Keep the Lights On team to build automation that keeps the live application, remote-rendering infrastructure and deployment pipelines healthy.
A major focus will be reducing manual operational and on-call work through AI-driven automation. This includes maintaining and improving systems capable of detecting production problems, identifying root causes and autonomously creating and landing code fixes.
The product is in a transition phase, but it continues to support a significant active user base. The successful engineer will take ownership of production reliability, backend maintenance and operational automation while ensuring compatibility across VR, mobile and PC environments.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain backend automation that keeps a large-scale VR and user-generated content application healthy in production.
- Maintain the remote-rendered backend stack supporting cloud-streamed access on mobile and PC.
- Monitor weekly cloud-rendering deployments and ensure continued compatibility between VR and cross-screen users.
- Build automation covering release pipelines, build health, crash triage, production monitoring and incident detection.
- Maintain and improve an AI-assisted code-repair system that autonomously creates and lands code fixes.
- Develop tooling that automatically identifies broken builds and pinpoints the code, dependency or infrastructure change responsible.
- Build systems that recommend or execute fixes for build, deployment and production failures.
- Monitor production quality, reliability, capacity, latency and session performance.
- Investigate and respond to production regressions, incidents and outages.
- Keep cloud-rendering, CI/CD, build, release and deployment pipelines operational.
- Reduce recurring operational and on-call work through automation, with the goal of cutting manual activity by approximately 80–90%.
- Design self-healing and automated remediation capabilities wherever possible.
- Complete infrastructure and dependency migrations as upstream systems are retired.
- Ensure migrations do not disrupt downstream CI/CD or production services.
- Identify recurring operational problems and implement long-term automated solutions.
- Work autonomously and take ownership of delivery within a small, highly focused environment.
- Communicate progress, risks and technical decisions clearly to engineering and operational stakeholders.

Essential experience
- Eight or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent expertise.
- Strong hands-on backend software engineering experience.
- Proven experience building and operating CI/CD, build, release and cloud-deployment pipelines at scale.
- Experience operating cloud services and server-side fleets in live production environments.
- Experience supporting production reliability, capacity, performance and latency.
- Experience building or operating AI-assisted developer tools or agents that generate, modify or repair code.
- Experience creating tooling that detects broken builds and traces failures to the root-cause change.
- Strong production monitoring, crash-triage and incident-response experience.
- Experience supporting large-scale live applications across multiple platforms or surfaces.
- A demonstrable record of reducing operational and on-call workloads through automation.
- Experience completing infrastructure, platform or dependency migrations without breaking downstream CI/CD.
- The ability to diagnose complex problems across backend applications, build systems, deployment pipelines and cloud infrastructure.
- Strong ownership and the ability to work independently with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Clear communication skills and confidence working across engineering, runtime and operational teams.

- Cloud gaming, cloud application streaming or remote-rendering experience.
- Experience supporting VR applications or cross-platform environments.
- Asset-delivery or CDN pipeline experience at scale.
- Experience monitoring capacity, latency or session orchestration for streamed workloads.
- Experience operating live-service or other large-scale production applications.
- Familiarity with large monorepo build systems and dependency management.
- Experience designing self-healing systems or automated remediation solutions.
- Developer productivity, production engineering, release engineering or site reliability engineering experience.
- Experience supporting products across VR headsets, mobile and PC.
- Previous experience working within a large multinational technology organisation.
About you
You will be a senior, hands-on backend engineer who is comfortable taking complete ownership of complex production and build-system problems. You should be able to investigate failures across CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, remote rendering and deployment environments, determine the root cause and build reliable automation that prevents the same problem from recurring.
This role may operate similarly to a one-person team in some areas, so you must be proactive, highly autonomous and comfortable making progress without extensive oversight. You will combine strong software engineering ability with an operational mindset and a clear focus on reliability, automation and reducing repetitive manual work.
