About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated AI Engineer to join our Science and Strategic Initiatives team at Google DeepMind. In this role, you will focus on building and operationalizing a self-improving meta-agent framework designed to diagnose, remediate, and improve AI agent performance across various domains including science, cybersecurity, and coding. Your responsibilities will include designing diagnostic agents, developing automated validation pipelines, and creating memory architectures to extract insights from multi-agent deployments. You will work closely with research teams to characterize model limitations, drive foundational improvements, and ensure the robustness of AI systems in real-world applications. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to transformative AI solutions that have scientific, commercial, and societal impact, with the flexibility to work from locations in London, UK or Mountain View, CA, USA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software design and development using Python, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure
  • Experience building, deploying, and operating multi-agent or AI systems in production or near-production environments
  • Experience with evaluation frameworks, metrics design, or quality measurement for machine learning systems
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional research teams, external partners, or enterprise customers to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Preferred: Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
  • Preferred: Experience with large-scale data pipelines, foundation model training, or fine-tuning at scale
  • Preferred: Research experience with publications in AI/ML conferences or relevant research environments
  • Preferred: Domain expertise in life sciences, drug discovery, cybersecurity, or developer tools

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the self-improving meta-agent framework, including scaffolding, diagnostic tools, and feedback mechanisms across various domains
  • Deploy, monitor, and enhance AI agents in real-world settings, working closely with enterprise clients and academic partners to scale deployments effectively
  • Create automated evaluation pipelines to assess agent quality, robustness, and performance beyond traditional lab benchmarks
  • Develop cross-engagement learning systems and memory architectures to extract, distill, and generalize insights from multiple agent deployments
  • Characterize core foundation model limitations through empirical evidence and collaborate with research teams to implement targeted improvements
