About The Role
The Trade Desk is seeking a talented and experienced Staff Backend Engineer to join the SCORE team based in our London office. This role involves technical leadership in designing, building, and maintaining backend systems that support a high-traffic web and data platform. As a key technical authority, you will influence the system architecture, ensure operational excellence, and drive modernization efforts. You will act as a mentor and reviewer for engineering peers, fostering a culture of high standards and continuous improvement. The role offers a unique opportunity to work on complex, large-scale systems that process petabyte-scale data, support AI agent infrastructure, and deliver real-time campaign metrics. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align on standards, improve system reliability, and shape the future direction of core platform components. This position provides a pathway into people management, with responsibilities to lead and develop engineering talent as the team grows.

Qualifications
- Extensive experience building and operating backend systems for large-scale web or data platforms
- Proficiency in backend programming languages such as C#/.NET (preferred) or equivalent
- Strong understanding of SQL and database management
- Experience designing and building GraphQL and/or REST APIs
- Background in reporting or scheduled-reporting systems
- Experience with AI or agentic system development is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments
- Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Interest and experience in mentoring, guiding, or leading engineering teams
- Desire to develop into a people management role over time
- Ability to prioritize, scope, and execute complex technical projects
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership by designing, building, and operating backend systems for a high-traffic, data-intensive platform
- Conduct design and code reviews, ensuring high standards and best practices across the engineering team
- Drive the technical strategy for cross-cutting, ambiguous problems, balancing reliability, performance, and delivery speed
- Collaborate with other teams and platform governance groups to establish and uphold shared standards and practices
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement
- Manage the onboarding and growth of a senior engineer, with a future pathway to leading larger teams
- Represent the team’s technical needs and staffing requirements in cross-functional planning sessions
- Take ownership of production systems, ensuring operational health, performance, and reliability
- Contribute to modernization initiatives, including infrastructure improvements and system upgrades
- Support development of AI infrastructure, including data scanning, caching, and agentic use cases
- Partner with stakeholders to communicate technical trade-offs and project progress effectively
