Software Engineer - Industrial Automation, Semiconductor & Scientific Instrumentation (Talent Pool) - all grades

Salaries are variable. We will always advise you of the role and pay range which aligns to the role we are considering you for if you are invited to attend an assessment.
Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Working Pattern: Hybrid (typically 3 days per week onsite)
Are you a Software Engineer who enjoys building software that controls real-world hardware rather than websites, mobile apps or business systems?
Do you have experience developing software for industrial automation, scientific instrumentation, semiconductor equipment, robotics, machine control, motion systems or other complex engineering products?
At Infinitesima, software engineering sits at the heart of everything we do. Our engineers develop the applications, control systems and operator interfaces that power sophisticated Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) inspection and metrology systems used by leading semiconductor manufacturers worldwide.
As we prepare for significant growth over the next 6-12 months, we're building a network of talented Software Engineers across a range of experience levels, from early-career engineers through to Principal Engineers.
Whilst we are not actively interviewing for these positions today, we'd love to hear from exceptional engineers who would like to be considered as future opportunities become available.

Technologies and Skills We're Actively Interested In
We're particularly keen to connect with Software Engineers who bring one or more of the following:
- Industrial C#/.NET development experience
- Desktop application development using WPF or similar frameworks
- Experience with object-oriented programming languages such as C#, Java or C++
- Software development for industrial automation, robotics or machine control systems
- Tool control or hardware-integrated software development
- Precision motion control, mechatronics or real-time control systems
- Scientific instrumentation, semiconductor equipment or metrology systems
- Experience working alongside electronics, optics, hardware or mechanical engineering teams

What Future Software Engineering Opportunities Could Involve
Depending on the role and level, future opportunities could include:
- Designing and developing C#/.NET applications for semiconductor inspection and metrology systems
- Developing software that controls precision motion systems and nanoscale positioning technologies
- Building user interfaces and HMI applications using WPF and related technologies
- Integrating software with motion controllers, piezo actuators, sensors and data acquisition hardware
- Supporting system integration, verification, validation and software releases
- Contributing to software architecture, engineering standards and best practice
- Collaborating within multidisciplinary teams spanning software, electronics, optics and mechanical engineering
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers (senior-level roles)
What We're Interested In
We're particularly interested in hearing from engineers who have experience in one or more of the following environments:
- Industrial automation
- Motion control systems
- Robotics
- Scientific instrumentation
- Semiconductor equipment
- Metrology systems
- Manufacturing automation
- Control systems engineering
- High-precision electromechanical systems
- Research and development environments
For early-career engineers, a strong academic background in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics or another scientific discipline is highly valuable.
For more experienced engineers, experience within scientific, engineering or hardware-focused industries would be particularly relevant.

- Your experience is primarily focused on web development
- Your background is predominantly SaaS, fintech or e-commerce platforms
- You have limited exposure to hardware-integrated software or engineering products
Qualifications
We're interested in candidates who have:
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or a related discipline
OR
- Equivalent commercial experience developing complex engineering software systems

Interview availability: Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm UK time.
Stage 1
45-minute remote interview
An opportunity to discuss your experience, technical background and career interests.
Stage 2
Onsite interview
A collaborative assessment of technical capability, communication style, problem-solving approach and ways of working. You'll also have the opportunity to learn more about our technology, culture and future plans.
We're committed to creating a comfortable interview experience. If eye contact feels challenging, please let us know. For remote interviews, you're welcome to switch your camera off after introductions if that helps you feel more at ease.
We dress casually and informal attire is absolutely fine for onsite interviews.
