About BIP
BIP is an international consultancy specialising in business transformation, technology and innovation. We work with some of the world’s leading organisations to solve complex challenges and deliver meaningful, sustainable change.
BIP xTech is our Centre of Excellence for technology consulting and digital engineering, bringing together specialists across software engineering, cloud, data, AI and emerging technologies.
We are looking for a Technical Lead – Java & Web Platforms to join our growing xTech team and lead the design and delivery of complex, business-critical digital platforms for major UK and international clients.
The role
This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining software engineering, solution design, team leadership and client engagement.
You will provide technical direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams across back-end, front-end, DevOps and QA, while remaining close to the code and day-to-day delivery.
Working across the full software delivery lifecycle, you will help shape scalable, secure and maintainable solutions, collaborating closely with client stakeholders, product teams, architects and BIP colleagues across the UK and internationally.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead the technical direction and end-to-end delivery of complex web applications and digital platforms.
- Translate business and functional requirements into pragmatic technical designs, delivery plans and engineering decisions.
- Lead multidisciplinary and internationally distributed teams across back-end, front-end, DevOps and QA.
- Define solution architecture, application components, APIs, integrations, data flows and deployment approaches.
- Remain hands-on through coding, prototyping, code reviews, troubleshooting and resolution of complex technical challenges.
- Establish and promote engineering standards across code quality, testing, security, performance, observability and documentation.
- Guide the delivery of cloud-native, microservices-based and API-led solutions.
- Oversee technical delivery across development, test, release and production environments.
- Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Delivery Managers and client stakeholders to manage technical priorities, dependencies, risks and trade-offs.
- Ensure scalability, resilience, availability, security and maintainability are considered throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Support DevOps and QA teams in establishing effective CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and reliable deployment processes.
- Facilitate technical workshops and communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentor engineers, provide constructive feedback and support their ongoing development.
- Contribute to project mobilisation, technical discovery, estimation and solution shaping for new client opportunities.
- Collaborate with BIP teams and Centres of Excellence to identify reusable components, accelerators and innovative approaches.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
