About Akereos
Akereos Capital is a boutique, FCA-regulated investment bank specialising in energy transition M&A and debt advisory, based in St James’s, London. Akereos Commodities is the group’s commodities business, active in physical and financial commodity markets connected to the energy transition.
In this role, you will work across both divisions, with direct visibility of the business and its counterparties.
The Role
Akereos is investing in its engineering capability. The role covers internal tooling, data infrastructure and the application of AI to research and analysis in support of the firm's advisory teams. It sits within Akereos Capital and additionally supports Akereos Commodities.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for work from specification through to production deployment and ongoing support, working directly with the front office.
What You Will Be Doing
- Designing and shipping agentic systems to a production standard: tool calling, planning loops, retries, human-in-the-loop checkpoints and controlled behaviour when a model gets something wrong.
- Writing MCP servers that make internal tooling available to those systems under tightly scoped, least-privilege permissions.
- Building retrieval and extraction pipelines over difficult source material: scanned PDFs, complex tabular data, long-form documentation.
- Building evaluation harnesses for non-deterministic systems, so that the effect of any change can be measured and evidenced before it goes near production.
- Owning the infrastructure: CI/CD, containerisation, deployment, observability, and cost and latency monitoring.
- Being the person who raises the security or governance concern before anyone has to ask.

Key Responsibilities
Core Engineering
- Ability to program in Python
- Previous experience using TypeScript / Node.js
- Strong SQL and Postgres: schema design, query optimisation, migrations.
- At least one vector store (pgvector, Qdrant, Weaviate) and clear judgement about when not to use one.
- CI/CD (GitHub Actions), Docker, and comfort with orchestration (Kubernetes or ECS) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
- Automated testing: pytest, integration and contract testing, and specifically evaluation harnesses for non-deterministic systems.
- Observability: structured logging, tracing, and LLM-specific tooling such as LangFuse, LangSmith or Arize.
- Hands-on experience with GCP.
AI Engineering
- Demonstrable experience building agentic systems that have run in production, with real users, real constraints and real failure modes.
- Writing MCP servers, not only consuming them.
- Hands-on experience with at least one agent framework — for example LangGraph, the Claude Agent SDK, OpenClaw or comparable.
- Retrieval over difficult source documents: PDF and scanned-document extraction, tabular data in financial reporting, long-form legal and contractual documentation.
- A properly developed security posture around agents: prompt injection, tool permissioning, sandboxing and secrets handling.

Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of total software engineering experience, of which 6 months shipping LLM-based systems in production.
- Exposure to both large corporate and startup environments. We are looking for someone who understands why controls exist and is still capable of moving at pace within them.
- A track record of taking ownership from idea through to full production deployment.
- Sound judgement on confidentiality and data handling. Akereos works under strict NDA and information barrier obligations, and every member of the firm is held to them.
Desirable
- Open-weight models and self-hosted inference: vLLM or TGI, quantisation, GPU capacity planning
- Experience with more than one agent framework, and the ability to articulate the trade-offs between them.
- Familiarity with financial data structures: cap tables, waterfalls, amortisation schedules, covenant tests.
- Prior experience in financial services, professional services or another regulated industry.
