Software Engineer — UAV/UGV

UK / Hybrid — Regular international travel, including NATO and allied Operational Exercises

Looking for something a little bit spicier than your typical software role? If you want a role where no two days feel the same.... Read on!

I’m working with an early-stage defence tech start-up who are building a product to counter ever-growing UAS/UAV threats.

They have a working prototype which has been trialed in the field on multiple NATO military exercises.

They already have purchase orders in place. The goal now is to improve and iterate as they work towards getting it production ready.

That means getting it to talk reliably to partner systems, tactical networks and C2 platforms or even integrating it onto an autonomous vehicle, then deploy with the team on exercise to see whether it holds up.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we’re looking for:

If you’ve had exposure to real-time messaging and data standards or the likes of TAK/ATAK, CoT, MQTT or SAPIENT. That would be ideal but not necessary.

What’s important is that you’ve tackled this kind of problem before and have experience in some of the following:

  • Real-time messaging and protocol work: MQTT, WebSockets, gRPC, raw TCP/UDP or socket-level programming.
  • Embedded or systems-level software: C/C++, embedded Linux, device drivers, or low-level hardware interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART)
  • Building integrations against a third party's API, SDK, or published spec and owning that relationship end-to-end.
  • Comfort operating below the HTTP/REST abstraction when the problem calls for it.
  • Python or Node.js for services, tooling, and orchestration.
