Job Description
Preferred qualifications for the role of Software Engineering Manager at Filmetrics (KLA):
You will lead and grow a multidisciplinary team of software and firmware engineers, responsible for designing, developing, releasing, and supporting our core products:
- Surface profiler systems
- Thin-film measurement instruments
- Sheet-resistance analyzers
- Nanoindentation measurement instruments
The role requires technical leadership across:
- Embedded firmware
- Windows desktop applications (C#/.NET, C++)
- Software architecture
- Measurement and data-analysis/algorithm development
- Leveraging AI/ML/DL advancements
Key responsibilities include:
People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 5+ senior/lead engineers, setting clear goals, providing feedback, and supporting career growth.
- Conduct formal research findings and performance reviews while fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
- Hire and onboard top talent and build a high-performing team.
- Champion positive engineering practices and inclusive team dynamics.
Technical Direction
- Oversee planning, scope, and execution of software initiatives (embedded, PC applications, AI-enhanced workflows) using Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Advocate for sound technical architecture and design decisions, ensuring codes meet high standards in performance, reliability, and security.
- Drive quality and performance targets, minimizing defects in measurements, systems, and AI-assisted tools.
- Partner closely with hardware engineering, systems, product, and global teams to deliver prototypes on schedule.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with customer-facing teams, manufacturing, and APAC regions to define system requirements and align roadmaps.
- Champion the responsible adoption of AI/ML while ensuring compliance with security controls—removing barriers to innovation.
- Foster cross-site collaboration (US, Europe, Asia) for early integration, debugging, bug fixes, modern development pipelines, and root-cause response.

Process & Quality Champion
- Improve software diagnostics, observability, and CI/CD pipelines for faster insights and release cycles.
- Continuously assess and improve engineering processes, from device characterization to confinement.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, or Physics plus 8+ years relevant experience (or)
- Master’s degree (or advanced) in the same disciplines with 6+ extra years experience.
Key criteria:
- Proven record as a senior software/firmware engineering lead or as a people manager within engineering organizations.
- Technical coaching and design review skills covering:
- Architecture, event-driven/multithreaded systems
- C#/.NET desktop apps in laboratory automation environments
- C/C++ firmware development for embedded photonic, optical, or sensor systems
- Complex data-analysis/processing algorithms (e.g. statistical analysis, calibration, noise-reduction).
- Architecture and code review experience ensuring cross-team consistency in software quality and performance.
- Work experience with version control (Git) and modern development lifecycles (Git-based workflows, feature-branch branching, agile ceremonies).
Preferred:
- Experience with embedded-systems toolchains (e.g. Eclipse CDT, GNU Toolchain) and Low-level Instrument Control using National Instruments LabVIEW or Python libraries (e.g. PyVISA).
- Hands-on experience with porting software across platforms (Windows, Linux).
- Track record of resolving industry-specific challenges in analysis (e.g. time-series gating, spectral analysis, optical character recognition).
- Secret clearance or R&D exposure in semiconductor manufacturing (metrology), biophotonics instrument, or scientific research.
- Familiarity with continuous integration and task-tracking tools (e.g. Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Jira).
- Knowledge of Machine Learning for dimensional measurement (supervised/unsupervised calibration) or predictive maintenance pivots.
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication (internal stakeholder and customer integrations).
- Analytical problem-solver with process-improvement mindset.
- Global-tech experience in coordinating with distributed legal/compliance teams across boundaries.

Travel Expectations:
- Travel may be required for product launch sites, compliance meetings, or conferences. Dedicated travel time should not exceed 10% of working hours.
