Software Engineering Manager

We’re looking for a highly motivated Software Engineering Manager to join us. Switch2 is the market leader in the heat network market in the UK. We specialise in designing, installing, operating, and billing heat networks, by joining Switch2 you can help us take the sector into its next growth stage.

At Switch2 our technology stack is itself subject to continuous improvement. Last year we moved to Rust as our primary language. We use AWS as our cloud provider and make extensive use of serverless (Lambda, DynamoDB, ECS, etc) technologies to scale our product offering. On the frontend, we use Leptos which is an isomorphic Rust web-framework and have a legacy estate of React and VB.Net applications.

Responsibilities

  • Help shape the engineering culture at Switch2 and build a collaborative and open environment
  • Influence our future engineering and product strategy
  • Contribute to the product roadmap
  • Engage with architecture discussions
  • Lead and mentor 2 software teams and 1 data team
  • Work closely with the other product teams (mechanical, electrical and IoT) across Switch2
  • Work closely with technical and non-technical team members to understand product requirements
  • Work with business stakeholders to prioritise and refine future workstreams
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback
  • Produce maintainable, high-quality code as an individual contributor

Skills

  • You have experience leading a team or teams
  • You have experience guiding and shaping your workstream to ensure we build the right thing
  • You have experience mentoring others and helping them grow their careers and competencies
  • You have a desire to work with Rust and within the functional programming paradigm
  • You have strong proficiency in Rust, Typescript, and the Node tool chain
  • You have experience and knowledge of coding best practices
  • You have experience with automation testing frameworks and proficiency with all levels of testing: unit, integration, end-to-end
  • You have experience working with non-technical stakeholders and care about non-functional requirements
  • You have experience with agile best practices such as TDD, pair programming, and focus on short, iterative feedback cycles
  • You have understanding and experience with APIs, databases, and cloud technology (AWS)
  • You have experience and expertise with design and cloud architecture
