Software Engineering Manager – Hands-On + Leadership

📍 Remote (Midlands, UK) | Occasional travel to UK & European sites

💰 £80,000 - £100,000

We're working with a client who is looking for a Software Engineering Manager who combines strong technical leadership with genuine hands-on delivery, taking ownership of both software architecture and cloud infrastructure across critical, high-reliability systems.

This is a true 50/50 role. You'll spend real time leading, growing and supporting a team of 6 (and counting), while also staying hands-on with architecture, code and infrastructure decisions. You're as comfortable in a 1:1 or planning session as you are in a code review or design discussion.

Leadership & Management

  • Lead and grow a small but expanding engineering team, providing clear technical direction and day-to-day management
  • Own team performance, development plans and career growth for your direct reports
  • Run planning, prioritisation and delivery cadence for the team, balancing technical debt against feature delivery
  • Act as the escalation point for technical and delivery risks, communicating clearly to stakeholders
  • Set and uphold engineering standards and best practices across the team
  • Mentor engineers, conducting code reviews and pairing to raise the bar on quality
  • Work cross-functionally with a multi-disciplinary team to translate customer and regulatory requirements into delivery plans
  • Contribute to hiring and onboarding as the team continues to grow

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Setup

This role is remote-first, with an expectation to be in the Midlands office around once a month, plus occasional travel to sites across the UK and Europe (roughly 2-3 times a year). You'll be joining a team working on systems where reliability, security and quality aren't optional extras.

If you're an engineering leader who still wants to write code, solve real problems, and shape a growing team's technical culture, we'd love to hear from you.
