I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we’re looking for
- A strong software engineering and development background, with proven experience building and architecting business-critical systems
- Strong hands-on coding skills, ideally in C# and/or Python, and the ability to contribute technically alongside the team
- Experience leading developers while retaining deep technical involvement
- Experience in front-office trading technology or closely related areas, working directly with the business
- A strong understanding of real-time data, messaging and distributed systems
- The ability to engage credibly with traders, quants and senior stakeholders
Market data expertise is highly desirable, but it isn’t essential to be a specialist in every platform or vendor technology. We’re also interested in technically strong engineering leaders from relevant trading, pricing, risk or real-time data environments who have worked closely with front-office users.

The key requirement is technical strength: a software development background, strong coding and architecture skills, and the appetite to remain hands-on. A generalist infrastructure or delivery management background alone won’t be a fit.
Why this role
- True ownership of a business-critical global platform
- A senior leadership role with meaningful hands-on engineering involvement
- Direct partnership with front-office trading and quant teams
- Opportunity to shape long-term architecture, strategy and engineering standards
- Senior leadership visibility and impact
