Software Engineering Manager

Location: London (Hybrid, 2-3 days per week in office)

Employment Type: Full-Time

My client is an award-winning payments company transforming the way businesses and consumers move money. Through innovative technology, exceptional customer experiences, and a culture of continuous improvement, we are building the next generation of payment solutions.

As they continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead high-performing software engineering teams, drive technical excellence, and help deliver scalable, secure, and resilient payment platforms.

The Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading and developing a team of talented engineers while partnering closely with Product, Architecture, Delivery, and Operations teams. You will focus on people leadership, delivery excellence, and engineering best practices to ensure the successful development of products that support our growing customer base.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, career development discussions, and coaching sessions.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of engineering talent.
  • Create an inclusive environment where team members can thrive.

Technical Leadership

  • Collaborate with engineers and architects to define scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Support engineering teams in making sound architectural and design decisions.
  • Champion software quality, security, performance, and operational excellence.
  • Encourage modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and cloud-native development.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with business and technology stakeholders.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and dependencies effectively.
  • Align engineering activities with organisational goals and strategic priorities.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience leading and managing software engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies and practices.
  • Experience delivering complex software products in agile environments.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-performing engineering teams.
  • Experience working within cloud-based environments (AWS, Azure or GCP).
  • Understanding of software architecture, system design, and scalable distributed systems.

Nice to Have

  • Experience within FinTech, Payments, Banking, Financial Services, or Regulated Industries.
  • Knowledge of payment processing, payment gateways, acquiring, issuing, card schemes, open banking, or embedded finance.
  • Experience working with highly available, transaction-heavy platforms.

Technology Environment

While experience with all technologies is not required, exposure to the following would be beneficial:

-.NET, Java, Python, or Node.js, React

  • Microservices architecture
  • RESTful APIs
  • Kubernetes and Docker
  • AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • CI/CD tooling
  • Observability and monitoring platforms
  • Modern data platforms and event-driven architectures
