Software Engineering Manager – M&S Platform Team (SRE Focus)

About the Role

As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll lead the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) function within M&S’s Platform Team. Your team will drive the development of reusable pipelines, tooling, and frameworks across our 30+ applications—boosting developer efficiency to unlock focus on building exceptional user experiences (UX). By ensuring engineers aren’t slowed by common CI/CD or infrastructure challenges, you’ll make M&S a benchmark for software excellence.

Your vision? Build and empower teams that can leverage culture, innovation, and technical ethos to switch priorities when needed while deliveringicer on streamlining development at scale.


Your Responsibilities

  • Own technical excellence for your team, ensuring best practices across behaviours, functionality, operational systems, team growth, problem-solving, and domain reputation.
  • Lead self-management and accountability through thoughtful leadership and transparent management.
  • Shape the overarching technical strategy as a platform owner and within the broader Engineering organisation.
  • Act as a bridge between the platform team and digital product outcomes, ensuring your solutions advance customer experience through data collaboration.
  • Narrative and align executive/leadership vision to product teams, ensuring dot-to-dot thinking align. Bring the field's knowledge, presenting it clearly to all stakeholders
  • Support senior engineers and technical partners through line management, recruitment strategy, and retention.
  • Serve as a guardian of OKRs within your hub, ensuring goals are measurable and motivating.
  • Foster and drive internal tech communities, mentoring and scaling best practices while managing strategy and collaboration.
  • Be the key technical partner in vendor discussions—aligning innovation with M&S-built and -run systems.

What We Want to See in You

  • Technical & Hands-On Background: Experienced polyglot senior engineer with hands-on SRE knowledge and a history of leading challenging systems.
  • Process Leader: Mastery of SLOs, SLIs, error budgeting, observability, incident response systems, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, security, reliability, and DevOps culture.
  • Team-Owner: Proven ability to hire and develop senior engineers to produce software productively and sustainably.
  • Cross-Functional Thinking: Ambitious in scaling engineering systems, recognised (preferably by peers) for thoughtfulness, and an ability to influence non-technical environments.
  • Cultural Fit: Servant-leader who builds trust, prioritises adaptability, and embodies clear purpose. Values principled engineering culture and inclusivity.
  • Influence: Entrepreneurial and diplomatic—collaborate with virtual or physical teams efficiently, speaking the customer’s language while responding to the tech team’s ambitions.


Tech Stack Mastery (Select any)

  • Practices: SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, reliability strategy, distributional system failures, incident economics, postmortem writing.
  • Computing Environment: Observability (metrics, logs, traces, alerting), cloud ops, Kubernetes, containers, and distributed systems.
  • Continuous Delivery: CI/CD, progressive delivery, rollback strategies, and safety of previous iterations.
  • Automation & Reducing Toil: Build pipelines, tools, and frameworks; self-healing systems; capacity planning; performance optimization.
  • Security & Compliance: Gov services, secrecy agreements, mandates, and access governance protocols.
