The opportunity
Birchwell Associates is supporting a growing technology business in the search for a Software Engineering Manager. This role will suit an experienced engineering leader who can combine people management, delivery ownership, and sound technical judgement.
You will lead a multi-disciplinary software engineering team, work closely with product and senior stakeholders, and help create the structure, standards, and environment needed for engineers to deliver high-quality software consistently.
What you will be doing
- Lead, coach, and develop a multi-disciplinary software engineering team.
- Improve planning, delivery predictability, engineering quality, and team effectiveness.
- Work with product leaders to shape priorities, delivery plans, and technical trade-offs.
- Support architectural decision-making and ensure engineering standards remain practical and consistent.
- Build effective hiring, onboarding, progression, and performance-management processes.
- Use delivery and engineering metrics to identify risks, remove blockers, and guide improvement.

What we are looking for
- Strong commercial experience managing software engineering teams.
- A technical background in software engineering, architecture, or hands-on development.
- Experience leading delivery in a SaaS, digital product, or technology-led environment.
- Confidence managing senior engineers and supporting career development across different levels.
- A good understanding of cloud platforms, modern development practices, testing, and CI/CD.
- Clear communication and the ability to work effectively with product, design, and senior business stakeholders.
