Software Engineering Manager – M&S Platform Team

As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll lead the M&S Platform team in delivering scalable solutions for over 200 engineers and 30+ applications—covering both customer-facing and colleague-facing systems.
Your role will focus on:
- Managing the development of a web platform
- Supporting the team in defining a technical vision for reusable pipelines, tooling, plugins, and frameworks
- Ensuring developers have the best possible experience through data-driven, customer-centric solutions -Advancing platform ownership while contributing hands-on to coding and daily operations
We aim to make M&S one of the best places for software development, adopting cutting-edge tools and empowering engineers to build best-in-class user experiences without stagnation caused by standard engineering or CI/CD challenges.
About the Role
You’ll lead a high-impact team on the M&S Platform, building a foundation that enables faster, more reliable application delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Driving engineering excellence: Accountability for technical direction, ops, skills, growth, and reputation within your teams.
- Leadership & empowerment: Cultivating self-managed, high-performance teams with clear purpose and strategic talent development.
- Technical strategy alignment: Working across the Technology organisation to shape platform vision and ensure strategic scaling.
- Product thinking & platform ownership: Applying data/customer-centric thinking to enhance digital products and streamline partner workflows.
- Strategic leadership: Collaborating with engineering leadership to align goals, foster "thinking big," and solve complex challenges collaboratively.
- People & culture: Line managing Staff and Senior Engineers, driving recruitment, retention, and mentorship.
- OKR oversight: As custodian, ensuring your team’s Objectives and Key Results are clear and impactful.
- Technology communities: Sparing spaces/time for strategic discussions and bar-raising initiatives.
- Vendor partnerships: Representing M&S as the key technical partner, advocating for consolidated M&S internal/external tools equally.

Requirements
Your Profile
As a strategic technologist, you should have:
- Polyglot, hands-on experience as a senior software engineer with expertise in modern web technology.
- 3+ years senior experience in software engineering, managing complex systems and technologies.
- Expertise in system design, architecture, cloud principles, and scaling engineering workflows.
- Promoter of DevOps—you build, manage, and scale solutions end-to-end.
- Deep understanding of testing strategies and reliability engineering.
- Exceptional people management skills: ability to inspire, guide, and empower senior engineers to achieve goals without micromanaging.
- Confidence in communicating across audiences, from technical to non-technical.
