🚀 Lead Software Engineer / Technical Lead | TypeScript, React.js & AWS
📍 UK Remote Working | Northern England preferred
💰 £75,000 - £90,000 + benefits
Are you an experienced Senior / Lead Engineer who wants greater technical ownership without moving away from hands-on engineering?
Recann is working with a growing technology business in the health, fitness and performance sector to appoint a hands-on Technical Lead / Lead Software Engineer.
You'll help design and build modern platforms used by established fitness and wellness businesses, working across a mixture of new product development, replatforming and scaling existing systems. This isn't a role where becoming a Lead means spending your week in meetings.
You'll still write and review code, make architectural decisions and solve engineering problems. You'll also mentor other engineers and work directly with customers to turn commercial requirements into well-designed technical solutions.
What you'll work on
You'll be involved in:
- Designing and building backend services and APIs using TypeScript
- Architecting scalable applications on AWS
- Working with services including ECS, RDS and ElastiCache
- Building and integrating third-party APIs and payment services
- Infrastructure as Code and automated deployments
- CI/CD, testing, observability and engineering quality
- Reviewing code and setting technical standards
- Mentoring engineers and supporting technical decisions
- Working directly with customers and product stakeholders
- Helping improve how engineering teams use tools such as Cursor, Claude Code and other AI-assisted development tools

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why this role?
You'll get the opportunity to remain a hands-on engineer while having genuine influence over architecture, technical standards and delivery.
You'll also work across different products and engineering challenges, giving you exposure to systems at different stages of growth rather than being restricted to one technical problem. The business is also actively embracing AI within software engineering. This isn't simply experimentation. Engineers are encouraged to use modern AI development tooling where it improves the way software is designed, built and delivered.
