Senior Test Engineer – Backend Testing
Rate: £84–£88 per hour
Location: Remote
Contract: 6 months (Likely Extension)
A leading global technology platform is looking for an experienced Senior Test Engineer to join a growing insurance engineering team.
This is a backend-focused testing role within a team of developers working primarily with Perl and Java. You will lead testing discussions, review code and work directly with engineers to test and debug complex backend services.
The successful candidate will be a confident test advocate who can challenge developers constructively, improve software testability and ensure the team has a strong level of confidence before releasing changes into production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead backend testing across complex services and integrated systems.
- Work with Perl and Java developers to test and debug software changes.
- Read and understand code to support testing, investigation, and code reviews.
- Lead testing discussions during refinement, development, and release planning.
- Champion early and continuous testing throughout the Agile lifecycle.
- Challenge developers constructively on test coverage, assumptions, and release readiness.
- Improve the testability, observability, and controllability of backend services.
- Validate changes across backend services, Kafka events, and MySQL data.
- Improve test evidence, defect management, and risk-assessment processes.
- Identify opportunities for test automation, contract testing, and AI-assisted testing.

Key Requirements:
- Strong experience as a Senior Test Engineer, with a focus on backend systems.
- Comfortable reading code and working with developers during testing, debugging, and code reviews.
- Experience testing applications developed in Java, Perl, or similar backend languages.
- Strong knowledge of Agile processes and continuous testing.
- Excellent understanding of software testability.
- Confidence leading testing discussions with developers.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Comfortable challenging developers and engineering teams constructively.
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Experience improving testing processes, test evidence, and defect management.

Desirable Experience:
- Test automation within CI/CD pipelines.
- Contract, API, or service-level testing.
- Kafka, MySQL, and event-driven systems.
- Kubernetes or other modern platform technologies.
- Non-functional testing, including reliability and performance.
- Using AI tools to support or accelerate testing.
